Is it worth it?

Basically, I'm getting a 3700+ San Diego and I've heard good things about this chip--namely, I will be able to hit 2800mhz on air without a huge bump in the vcore. Now, I hear that this chip can also do about 3200mhz (if not more) with phase change. I know someone that is willing to sell me a custom-built single phase unit within an aluminum enclosure for $300. My question is: Is it worth it? Would you guys make the purchase? I need some opinions to help me make up my mind 😛.

I would say so. A San Diego is basically an underclocked FX chip on the 90nm process. It should overclock nicely (though be more conservative in your hopes.... 2.6 to 2.7 versus straight 2.8). In other words, just 512k more L2 cache.

If my budget was bigger, I would have gotten this over the 3200+ Venice.

Edit: Just saw Integra's link. My statement holds true (to me at least) barring any technical issues 🙂

Hmm, I heard that the coldbug would only really be an issue for multiple phase/cascade users (ie. temps much lower than -40C). I could of sworn people have gotten good results with single phase -40C cooling with this chip.

The san diego is worth it, but the $300.00 refrigeration cooling isn't. Just get a $50.00 Xp-120 and be happy loosing a couple hundred Mhz. You're talking about $.75 a Mhz for what you want.

Yeah, that's basically what I was thinking. I was 80% sure that I wasn't going to get it--just wanted to see if anyone could sway me 😛. I was thinking of getting an XP-90C though. Isn't this better and only like $10 more?

xp-90c will cool about 1-3C more than xp-90 with the same fan.. not worth the price difference if you ask me.. plus its a lot heavier, which shouldn't be a problem, however if/when you move your computer around, you'll have to be careful
