Is it worth it to upgrade from a Sempron 3200+ to a Athlon 64 3200+?

I currently have a Sempron 3200+ installed in my storebough PC. Would it be worth it to upgrade to a Athlon 64 3200+? I can't overclock in this PC, I am just trying to upgrade this PC as much as possible before buying a new motherboard so that I can just do a transfer whenever I do buy a new motherboard. Would it be smarter to wait until the 24th and then buy a 3800+ X2?

I personally would wait until the 24th for the X2, the difference between a sempron 3200+ and an Athlon 64 3200+ is mostly just cache and the performance difference isn't big enough if you are thinking of the X2 3800+ later on this month. Just wait.

Besides, isn't the sempron a socket 754 CPU? If you want the X2 3800+ definitely don't bother with changing the CPU now because of socket differences.

Monarch is letting you order at post July 24th prices already.. but they'll deliver after the price reduction anyway..

the only difference being the cache.. u'd be hard pressed to feel the difference..

Better be 100% sure your store-bought Sempron machine is 939 vs. the old 754.

You wouldn't see much upgrade in speed from Semp3200+ to A64-3200+.

If you have a lucky 939 Sempron, hold out another week for the X2 3800+... BIG difference!!

Holy crap! My core speed is only 800MHz to your 1800MHz!

No wonder this thing feels sluggish!! Stupid XP-M processor for 754.

Oh that wasn't my idle speed. I had a DVD burnering, was encoding a movie, and had about 15 programs running in total.

Is that bad? Sorry I don't know anything about overclocking or anything. This is how it was when I bought it. Here is a CPU-Z report.

CPU-Z reports my vcore incorrectly also. I doubt that chip would've lasted very long at 2.048 volts. Try the newest version of CPU-Z. If 2.04 is correct you should look into fixing that.

You do have 939, so wait until the 24th.

Much better. The newer vesion worked for me as well.

I am just trying to upgrade this PC as much as possible before buying a new motherboard so that I can just do a transfer whenever I do buy a new motherboard.

I'm curious why you chose this upgrage path. Why and when do you plan to replace the motherboard?

I would upgrade to something bigger than that. You would see a performance increase. Save your cash for after Conroe comes out, and buy a cheap dual core.
