OP, personally, I'd recommend that you sell your card - even if you can't get much for it - and get a newer and more powerful single GPU [setup].
I have little doubt that you'll want an increase in performance within a short amount of time and a new card will most likely already have more power than you're looking for [unless you get a low-end card]; and even if you don't, if you hit the VRAM wall, you're stuck...

I've done CrossFire before [two 5770s], but I didn't like it one bit, so I got a 6950. I prefer single GPU setups - far less application/game issues with them. :)

VRam is hardly a "brick wall" as there are many things you can do to help alleviate that issue. The use of Edge-Detect AA for one, helps bring down the load on the VRam and shift some of that burden to the stream processors.
