Is it worth getting two GeForce 9800 GX2s?

Hi all, I'm in the process of putting together a new gaming PC, my question is this:
Is it worth getting two GeForce 9800 GX2?
From what I can see atm, the only use for 2 of these is playing at very high res.
Is this correct?
I currently have a 21" CRT and am sticking with it for the moment, but am unsure if I should get 2 of those, because I'm not sure of the performance gains(probably won't be playing above @1600 res).
Thanks,
Stublore.

Definitely not with a 21" CRT. At that rez you'd be fine with a single 3870/8800GT with most things disregarding Crysis which nothing can play.

1 GX2 is good enough for 1600@900/1680x1050. You also must be using Vista to run 2 GX2's if you decide to get them. I run a GX2 at that res and everything runs well except for Crysis of course.

His 21" CRT can probably do 2048x1536 which is a lot more pixels than 1920x1200.

Which is perfect for 3D rendering such as games. The smaller the pixels there the better.

Quad SLI with these cards frequently performs worse than a single GX2, and the AFR microstutter effect will be more prominent with four GPUs as well. Definitely not worth it.

Hell no, not with the GT200 rumored to be coming in about three months.

Is that still the case? The last thing I saw said something about late Q3. I'm itching to upgrade. :p

to some degree, yes

once pixels are so small for eye to register all image details, that is too much and no benefit, just downside - less FPS.

Since he's on a CRT, he can also downscale games without degrading IQ too much...hell, I'm inclined to suggest 1 8800GT/GTS or 9800GTX at the very most.

PALIT 9800 GX2 Video Card $499.99 AP + shipping

Does ANYONE ever remember - at any time in NVIDIA's history - when their Flagship card dropped [over] $100 in just a single month after Launch?

is it my memory or is this a unique moment?
- i don't NVIDIA like the perception of GX2 and 9800 series
[as i sadly predicted 2 months ago :(]

Absolutely.

Because...

EDIT: All joking aside the three things that keep me from getting one:

1) 256bit memory interface and only 512MB per card.
2) Cooling system does NOT reject heat outside of case.
3) Dualview broken when SLI engaged.

No. 2 and No. 3 there's no excuse for but there you have it.

i agree except it will take me 20 minutes to find out what you linked me too ... sorry .. i'll take the Cliffs instead

and i'd like to add a few additional reasons why i wouldn't go for it and 3 directly apply to me [8/9/10]

4) GTS 512 - SLI
5) GT9600 SLI
6) 8800GTX/GTX SLi
7) 8800 Ultra/Ultra
8) TriCrossfire
9) R700
10) GT200

did i miss any?

I read somewhere nV realized a price drop was necessary to truly compete with 3880 X2. Rumor was a price drop was imminent.

latitute? why? It was litterally within a week. It is now 4-7-08. It was released 4-1-08. A month would be 5-1-08.... thats quite a huge difference. I have never seen any video card drop in price so much so fast.

i was trying to be "nice" :p
. . . OK, but thanks for confirming their 9800 Launch was a Flop -
. . . *thud*
.. sorry. NVIDIA, i told ja so :(
....... literally weeks ago

it would have been *cool* IF GX2 was called 8900 and it was also properly priced $499 at MSRP .. they would have looked like *Heroes*
-instead they hang on to old-sKool PR like ATi's that looks to "milk" its fans - thank the HW gods that ATi's marketing is *SO gone* .. we just now have to convince NVIDIA somehow to get some new more open and also clever marketing to match their Vision and great HW
