Is it worth getting a Wii?

My wife has been bugging me to get a Wii recently...even more now that I have my fantasy football winnings in my hand...(free money to her 🙂 )

Anyways I have been browsing on Craigslist for some used Wii's and also on Ebay for them as well...

I have only played a couple of games (mainly Wii Sports) and it was a novel time...just curious if the Wii fit is worth the price or some other games for our kids (4 and 5)

Are any of the sports games any fun? (Golf? Madden?) I can imagine Mario Kart is a good time as that has always been great.

Also...what would you say is a decent prices for a used one? Given it has some extras (remotes / numchucks)

Are there any 'must have' games?

Thanks in advance,

Lee

Depends on the games that you like. Tiger Woods is lots of fun, as is the usual suspects (New Super Mario Bros., Metroid, et al.)

what are some must have's for components...I see something regarding the Wii Motion Plus...

is that work the extra coin? Does it improve game play and enjoyment?

Do the Wii HD Component Cables make a big difference on an LCD?

My wife was asking about the Wii Fit...I have heard mixed results...a lot of people bought it and haven't used it much...if I recall you can use it for other games like skiing or snowboarding?

As far as games...I would guess some adult games like golf or a tennis game for me and the wife...there looks like there is a shit ton of games for the kids...so many mini games.

How are the games that you can download to the card / console (NES, N64, ect...)

I found one on CL and the guy is asking 300. I am not too sure on the games except for tiger woods...the others kind of look stupid to me.

I'd say it's worth having one or two around. The PGA Tour 2010 game is a lot of fun with the WM+ adapter.

There's enough of a difference that it's worth it. The picture is sharper and the colors are better. If you Google up "wii component cable" you can find various comparison shots around the web. Also, the official cables are overpriced. If the used system you are buying doesn't come with one I'd recommend getting some from Monoprice. The Monoprice cables are less than $4 while other 3rd party cables are generally around $15 and the official cables are $30-35.

Well, the classic games play just like their originals since they're being emulated. The WiiWare games are a mixed bag. A few decent ones, but most aren't very good IMO.

Boom Blox is surprisingly fun, but it's not going to blow you away or anything. It's definitely looks like a low budget game. On the download side World of Goo is a good game as are, obviously, the Mario games. I agree though, most of the rest are questionable at best.

Ask yourself these questions. Do you like Nintendo's big franchisees like Mario and Zelda? Do you like Nintendo games in general in the past. If yes then I would yes go for it. It's true that many of the games out there are aimed at a younger crowd and some of them are just plain stupid but there is enough good content (if you like Nintendo's style) that you will be happy.

Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Can't wait for this!
New Super MArio Bros Wii
Zelda Twilight Princes.
Metroid - though I haven't played it myself yet.

I bought my wife a Wii for Christmas for one reason. Homebrew. There's not a whole lot you can't do with it. That being said, I still find it stupid and gimmicky to play and do not enjoy playing anything on it for more than a few minutes.

If you have kids that are 4 and 5, the Wii is worth it. It has the most kid friendly titles of the three consoles.

WiiFit is fun but it's just like any other piece of exercise equipment you buy. It's only good if you actually use it. You're not going to burn alot of calories but it is good for Yoga and stuff. If you want to burn calories, try EA Active.

Check out metacritic.com for the best Wii games.

With a wife that wants it plus 2 young kids I would say yes. If you were a guy living by himself it would be a no. Wii has fun games to be played with others it the same room. Try out the new Mario if you like the old school Marios, maybe your wife would join you.

I would say don't bother with the motion plus yet. Not many games use it (the latest Tiger Woods does).

Mario Party is fun for a family of 4, kids might need another year or 2 though.

If you want types of games that aren't on the PC/360/PS3(they are all pretty much identical) or you like Nintendo stuff in general, then it's worth it.

People who say the Wii is trash either A. Don't find Nintendo games interesting(that's really what the Wii is about so I don't blame people who dislike Nintendo games for disliking the Wii) or B. Are just irrational fanboys of another platform and hate that the Wii is kicking their platform's ass

The best games on the Wii not in any order(but Mario Galaxy is the best game on the system) are:

Super Mario Galaxy
Zelda Twilight Princess
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Metroid Prime Trilogy(or 3 if you can't find Trilogy anymore but Trilogy is recommended)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Okami
Resident Evil 4 Wii(only if you didn't play the Gamecube version)
New Play Control Pikmin(only if you didn't play the Gamecube version)
Muramasa
Zack and Wiki
Super Paper Mario
Mario Kart Wii
World of Goo

I know I'm forgetting a couple. You can't say you're bored with the Wii until you've beaten all of these games or played and didn't like them.

I don't play or keep in the know on the quality of sports games so I can't help you there.

Get the cheapest component cables you can find from Monoprice or Amazon. All of the component cables are the same, the only difference is how much you pay for it. The component cables make the games much more vibrant, it is definitely noticeable.

Wii Motion Plus isn't necessary or really useful yet thankfully(Am not a fan of buying 50 million peripherals).

Get a black one so that dust shows up better. It'll let you know when to dust. At least that's what ours does...we were stoked with it at first and the novelty wore off REALLY quickly...

I got mine last month. If you have friends over regularly who like games that are actually fun then get one. I sold my 360. I use my PC for my personal gaming and the Wii for the girlfriend and friends. It's alot of fun when you can play games with the controller in one hand and a beer in the other.

We soft modded ours so....definitely worth it now.

The kids still play ours, but my wife and I lost interest almost immediately. Make no mistake, this console is for young children.

Wow, idiot much?

Go blow up stuff with XXcoolguyXX on XBox Live with screaming children over the mic.

The Wii is awesome. By yourself? Nope. Have a group of friends who like to play games? It can't be beat.

Yep, by myself I primarily play on the 360 for single-player and online. Playing with the kids, it is primarily the Wii with the exception of the LEGO games and a couple of others.

Thank you for proving my point with your little eTantrum. Just because I think the Wii is generally more suited to children doesn't mean your penis is small. Relax.

I would say no. A bunch of people I know have bought them...and as soon as the novelty factor wears off...it becomes a dust magnet.

I'm sure there are some people who play it regulary...especially kids who only have a Wii...but compared to a 360 or PS3...it just sucks in my eyes.

I agree with this as well as the long posts by leeland and dguy. I have 3 sets of friends (couples, some with and some without small children) who bought Wiis and thought they were the greatest thing since sliced bread for about 3 months. Now they hardly play them.

I would say that the novelty games like Wii Sports would get old, but if you'll be into games like Metroid, Zelda, and Mario, then the novelty would be less likely to wear off of those "real" games.

I OTOH bought a PS3 2 years ago and still play it very regularly. Also, once you add up all the extra stuff you have to buy for the Wii it's not much (if at all) cheaper than a PS3 or XBOX360. I say this because some of my friends bought the Wii because it was "cheaper" than the other consoles.

I bought a Wii a little over a year ago (Christmas 2008) with the primary intention of using it as a casual exercise system with the Wii Fit board. I have moderate joint and back problems so I can't run or lift weights and I HATE to exercise just for the sake of exercising, but the Fit games (particularly the new Fit Plus games) are entertaining enough to get us all moving at least a little bit on a regular basis, and some of the new Fit Plus games are good for elevating your heart rate and breaking a sweat without being too high intensity for my girls or for me.

We have added a few games such as the Lego games, Twilight Princess, Littlest Pet Shop (for my 6-year-old), and a few others that don't get played much any more such as Zack and Wiki and Thrillville. My three daughters (ages 9, 6, and 3) still beg me to let them play Wii Fit and the Lego games and would rather have the Wii on than watch TV. It has definitely been a worthwhile purchase for my family and I would highly recommend it if your family is in a similar situation.

As someone else mentioned, if you demand games with realistic graphics and lots of blood and explosions, the Wii won't be of much interest to you. but if you want (generally) fun games that anyone can play and enjoy, the Wii is a good option.

I have still never played a game on the Wii that I enjoyed enough I'd even bother to plug the damn system in if it was given to me for free. Honestly, I'm being real. I hate all the Wii games I've ever seen, so for me it's not worth it 😉

I know many adults do like theirs. I find the games very light-hearted kind of kiddy stuff. My favorite type of game involves people dying and the more gorey and ridiculous the way they die the better. It is the only way I cope. For that reason I have an xbox 360 and may one day get a PS3 if I want a blu ray player in the basement.

purbeast is right, but all you can expect of people is to relay their preferences. For mine the Wii is crap and not worth taking for free but others do like them so it depends on your preference for games.

I have tried Wiifit. It's crap. Total garbage. However, EA has one I see on tv and maybe it's not.
