Well, do you really need it? If you have the money and have the need for it, then you should get it. If not, then wait a while till the next generation ATI and Nvidia cards come out =)

You didn't say what kind of computer you have. Obviously, if you just spent $2,000 on a fully loaded 2.4 Ghz Pentium IV and need a video card for it right away, I'd say go for it.

Otherwise, if you're just looking for an upgrade for the GeForce card in your 1 year old 1.2 Ghz Athlon of something like that, I'd probably just tell you just to get a Ti4200. Or, if you're building a new computer for Christmas, I'd probably tell you to wait for a Radeon 9700 or whatever NVidia calls their NV30 cards.

At this late in the GF4's life cycle I'd say one definitely should not buy the top GF4 board. The Radeon 9700 is 1-3 weeks away and offers a much better feature set and far better performance.

Whether it's worth paying for the fastest card on the market is an entirely different matter... to buy mid/low end right now is reasonably safe. But with a clearly superior board less then a month from availability it's not a wise time to buy high end.

I completely agree with MC Hammer. Oh my god, I never thought I'd say that. Well, now I've done everything. Oh, and I agree with Rand too.

I'd stay with the GF3 awhile OC it to GF3 speeds if you can Alot of ti200's can reach ti500 speeds.

You should definitely wait for the Radeon 9700. If nothing else it should cause the Ti4600's price to drop and you can pick one up cheaper if you still want one.

Ditto, I have been at QuakeCon for the past few days and there are lots of purdy 9700s you can see. Anyway it's feature set is INSANE! Get this from unofficial benchmarks it dosen't matter what you turn on/off (IE FSAA, Anistropic filtering etc etc) you get almost the same (+/- 5%) fps numbers in the same benchies. Which means the CPU is SLOWING DOWN THE 9700 (mind you these are 2.53Ghz P4s)!

As far as news on NV30, if your love Nvidia soo much (I've never been a big fan). Well they finally taped out the design and is in early fabrication. But rumors say that since the NV30 uses .13 micron tech they are getting really bad yields off the silicon wafers (which means a fair percentage of chips out of fab are unuseble). Which isn't too surprising since Intel got into this same problem.
