Is it worth $13 for a "business class" seat upgrade on the Amtrak?

I might be taking the Amtrak to Los Angeles sometimes soon and was wondering if anyone has had similar experience. The last time I rode Amtrak was from Albany NY into NYC, and that was 3 hours in coach so I've never been to the business class cabin.

Reason I'm asking is because I'm going to have some luggage (going to be flying) and the upgrade doesn't seem too unreasonable. On the other hand, the Amtrak train is probably going to be so vacant that it might not make so much difference.

Well, ATOT: help me decide. Is it worth the money?

If you're riding during the week when the train is empty, don't bother. If you're going to hit peak travel times then pay for the upgrade.

Also, you can drink on Amtrak. That's amazing.

No, he has the luggage for a flight either before or after the train ride, but he will have it with him during the train ride.

i don't know if stuff has changed but I bought a florida rail pass right after 9/11. It was any amtrak travel for $150 for a year...right at the same time I met a freaking porn star in bed that lived a 2 hour drive from me.

I signed on.

You can travel to any car here. I often ended up in the smoking car because that was where the fun was (I hate smoke though so that sucked).

Unless you are sleeping (those cars were secured) it shouldn't really matter...just find the best seat you want.

The $13 upgrade is meaningless without your ticket price. For a single trip it's a toss-up to what $13 means to you.

No, it isn't. You'll get free non-alcoholic drinks, but the business class section sucks. If you were going to be in first class, like it used to be on the old metroliners, where the seats were REALLY comfy, etc. I'd say yes. But business class just puts you near the front of the train (usually, lately they've been putting the cafe cars in the middle of the train).

I bring my own six packs 🙂

OP: Why "the" amtrak? Do people say "the" jetblue? 🙂

I need to take the train to Union Station then go to LAX by shuttle so I can fly out from LAX, so yea.

This is going to be for Wednesday afternoon, and I'm not sure if there's going to be a lot of travelers. How do I find out?

I saw the website descriptions and aside from the vague possibilities of free drinks and better chair, I couldn't tell much difference. That's why I'm asking if anyone's ridden business class Amtrak here.

You've got the right idea. Empty train = not worth it.

I don't know how you'd check other than trying to buy 50 more tickets to see if it will let you

I have to ask with '83' in your name about your train experience.

If that's your born on date I have 10 years on you and only some amtrak experience. I am not counting commuter trains.

Ask someone who commutes on that line a lot OR just ask someone at the ticket counter.

I have earned over 100,000 Amtrak Guest Rewards points in my lifetime, and I have a current balance of 63,000. I own amtrakfan.com. I have taken Amtrak 5 times in the past week. I think I can speak for Amtrak with decent experience.

If there is one thing that is true about ManlyMatt, he is an Amtrak whore. He has probably taken more trains than any 3 ATOT members combined.

Thanks =)

business class is a bit nicer, roomier seats and usually comes w/a box lunch, snacks, etc.
For $13 bucks...go for it.

OP: which corridor are you talking about? is this a segment on a long haul train? Capitol Corridor? Doesn't sound like the Northeast Corridor since you said you're flying and you live in NYC. Things are different based on the area of the country.
