Is it unusual to have a host name like mine?

First off, I do not intend to offend anyone with the name of my computer. 🙂

Once upon a time before I had cable, I had a LAN set up (which will reappear once I install my RT314). On this LAN my C433 was called Allah. I am currently using the same NIC for my cable, as was used on the LAN. When the guys installed the cable, all they did to my computer was go into the NIC's TCP/IP properties and set it to get the data from a DHCP server.

Now, when I go into winipcfg, it list my host name as allah.XXXXX.adelphia.net

Is this normal? I can't believe it is. :Q Is there anything I should do about it?

Also, when I install my RT314, should I put in allah as the host, or just leave it blank since my ISP didn't give me a real host to use? Thanks!
 
Don't worry Allah is not punishing you.

You probably have the name somewhere in your Registry from previous installation.

Do a Registry search for this term, you will find out where it is stored, and you probably can change it.

In all the installations that I ever saw, it was not necessary to put the Host name in the Home Router menu.
 
What's the big deal? Your host name is allah, like it was before (your host name was the same as your computer name). And it gets taked onto your domian, either that's your cable companies domain or you made that up at some time.

What's bothering you, anyway? That's it's allah in winipcfg or that it's so long and funny looking?
 
Yeah, the name Allah is there from my LAN. I've heard about how cable companies (such as @Home) gave out the host names, so I wanted to make sure that it's ok for me to be using my host name since it isn't supplied by Adelphia.

It's russ.dot something.😀 Actually, running Winipcfg (what Sukhoi was doing) doesn't produce the FQDN on any of the Windows systems here because none are directly assigned the DNS servers. It just coughs up the machine name.

Actually I don't know if what I'm getting out of Winipcfg is right even though this computer is directly connected to my cable modem. If I do a ping -a on my IP# I get a different host name.

Kind of sad that you don't need to. I'm actually like C525977-a.crvlls1.or.home.com or something, but behind my dumb little consumer class router it doesn't matter. It's fun to be spare.idontcare.foo, but is counterproductive when it comes to certain things.
