Is it unethical to accept another job offer when u already accepted a contingent offer from someone else?

Ok I accepted a contingent job offer from govt contractor Company A for $x/year.
The contingency is that I need to pass certain test which they signed me up for.
Now, there is a long line for this test and it may take about 6 months before I get the chance to take it; and even then, there's no guarantee that I pass it. However, it takes a lot of effort on Compnay A's part to get me lined up to take this test and they are doing everything they can. They have also been very helpful in everyway.

Along comes Company B and they offer me $x+20K/year.
This position does not require any further testing.

Is it considered wrong in the world of contractors (i'm new in the scene) to sign a contingency offer with one compnay then bail out? especially if they are working hard to get you on their team? can $20k increase justify it?

*I forgot to mention that I already have found a 3 months contract job to fill the void while waiting for the test.

Any helpful comments would be appreciated.

I would tell company A that you are unable to wait 6 months to take the test, and thank them for the offer.

Unless somehow a friend vouched for you to get the job, or someone else's name was on the line, I wouldn't care at all. Helloooooooo Company B.

Did you sign a contract?

It boils down to burning bridges. I found a new job once, gave my two weeks at the old one. On my 2nd to last day at the old job, they offered me a significant raise. I elected to accept it. I called my former new employer and told them I was staying where I was. They hate me now but what can they do....I didn't sign anything and IMHO they'd waste me without thought if I wasn't working out....

What do U's job offers have to do with you? And where'd he get a name like that? It's quite U-nique (ha-ha).

(sorry, it's just really hard to take someone seriously when they type like a 6 year old 😛)

What's this test that you have to wait 6 months for? That's ridiculous. Company A is just asking for new hires to desert them if the new hires have to wait 6 months before hiring let alone waiting 6 months without a guarantee of hiring.

which job do you think you'd like better? If A, is it worth the wait plus less money? If B, there is no decision here, take the job!

Maybe you should accept company B then try to get on the waiting list for the test by yourself. THat way you have x+20 bucks a year and you'll be in line to ttake the test. and since you already have a paying job, you wont be in a hurry to take teh test anyways.

Why did U even bother to reply?
do U always type "rolling on the floor laughing" "as soon as possible", etc when u type on casual forums?
do U think U are so educated because U never use "U" in place of "you"?
Get a life.

Just noticed U have over 4700 posts and U just joined a few months ago. I recommend U take a break from neffing for a while.

Don't shy away from the best bit of professional advice you will ever receive 😉

take the job in hand and if you take the test and pass it quit and move to company A. you are a contractor, dont worry about ethics soo much as in my opinion this isn't scratching the surface of non-ethical behavior.

Thanx...that makes good sense even though it leaves a bad taste in the mouth

No, contractors do get benefits.
I mean working for a company who wins contracts from the govt or whatever.

When you say contractor, you mean an employee w/ no benefits?

it's some sort of certification. If i get it, it will look really good on my resume as well.

So your telling us you dont even know what test your waiting 6months to take, smells very fishy.

That is your story Im talking about.

Just like I have not named the actual names of the companies, I am only mentioning what people need to know in order to give me their thoughts on this matter.

If you haven't signed a binding agreement, you aren't obligated to stay with Company A's offer. They certainly have time to find someone else.
