is it true the 7900GS is the last AGP from nvidia?

just curious. I have a ti4200 that i have been using forever. I just upgraded from a 2200+AXP to a 3400+ A64 and i've been shopping aroun for cards to see if i can get a good deal.
I was initially going to go for a 7600GS because they were ~100 dollars, but I'm on an AGP board only and AGP variants run around 130-140 and upwads 150 which clearly isn't worth it for me.

So I figure I can just wait and pick one up here or there, and then I heard that the 7900GS/7800GS were the last, and strongest AGP cards that will be made. So i figured "why not get the beefiest I can since my upgrade path is dead now".

Is this true? I would probably wnt to pick one up now than later, beceause later I doubt the price will drop if the supply is low.

Interesting, as I was under the assumption the 7900GS cards were all PCIe.

I found the 7800GS in the Egg in AGP, but no 7900 GS cards are out in retail yet.

the 7900gs should be a pci-e only video card and its planned to hit the $199 pricepoint. initial batch will likely retail around $230 or so. 7600GS agp will be your best bet for sub $200 and 7800GS for sub $300.

7600gs is a worthless underperformer. 7800gs is incredibly overpriced. Spend $160 for a X800xt aiw for speed(95% as fast as a 7800gs).

The 7600gt has made it to agp. It runs a hair faster than the 7800gs for alot less. Its already available in UK online stores.

7800gs's are great overclocker's and are faster than a 7600gt even stock. They have recertified 7800's at new egg for 205.00$

Both companies have been trying to dump AGP big time since PCI-e came out. Typically there's a pretty hefty price premium for the AGP parts these days, and your choices are pretty limited. I'd recommend moving to a PCI-e motherboard. They aren't going to be making ANY decent AGP parts soon. Spend the 70+ on a good motherboard and you'll probably save close to that on your video card anyway.

There's been some decent deals on x8xx series AGP ati parts in hot deals recently though.

If u want a high end agp card , go with the gainwood bliss 7800gs+ , it will overclock to be better than a 7800gtx pcie even tho its agp.. it has 512 memory and a g71 core.

Thought these were only available in Europe and the poster might not be

I received an e-mail from Evga, this morning, in response to my question about a 7900 AGP card and they said they have no such plans, at the moment, to offer such a card. Anh Huynh, of Anandtech, also said it will be unlikely that a 7900 card will appear in an AGP format.

The best AGP bang for the buck is the ATI AIW X800XT, via ATI's tradeup program. Currently, the X850XT PE is considered the fastest AGP card, but only by a few percent over the AIW X800XT.

thats nice, but ATI has #@! for Linux drivers and I'm in Linux 85% of the time.

so it seems that the best thing out there is a 7800GS? Whoooo...lets hope the prices drop a little bit!

Alot of people thought the 7800GS was going to be the last AGP card. At some point there will be a cutoff. The AGP holdouts will fuss and cuss before they make the upgrade but eventually they will for the most part. Luckily for them places like ebay will allow them to get replacement cards for a while longer than ATI and nVidia will. I consider 2006 the last hurrah for AGP.

Skott,

you could very well be correct. However, with at least 70% of the market still on AGP, it somewhat doesn't make sense. I figure the turnaround average is probably two years and so I'd think it would make sense to pump them, agp cards, out for at least another year; wouldn't you?

I've stopped waiting, however and have ordered an ATI AIW X800XT ... this should hold me over for another year or two and the price is right, just over a hundred dollars.

i have several pc's which will still be running agp for some time, well into 2007 (not to mention servers). i am sure i am not alone in this. the only real reason to move from agp at this point is because the manufacturer's are forcing us.

But don't the manufacturers lose out in the process? Not all of them make motherboards, also. They must have some formula for calculating need and cost/benefit ratios, I guess ... I don't know.

i'm sure the decision is profit driven. aside from the fact it "promotes" upgrading more hardware, it also costs more to manufacture several different formats.. on top of that, a bridge chip is required adding to the cost, etc.

It's open source. Just write your own drivers FTW!

I think the 7800 GS is ~ the level of performance maximum Nvidia wants to have on AGP, which is about the same level as the 7600 GT.

It is doubtful at this point there will new more powerful cards for AGP. Maybe the same or slightly better with a greater feature set.

AGP will likely end up like PCI. It will see new cards, but they won't get any faster. PCI never really saw anything much faster than a geforce 2 level of performance, agp won't see anything much faster than a 6800gt level of performance.
