Is it true that a manual shift car engine lasts longer than a automatic?

well, not if you grind the gears silly. jk

I really don't know, but I don't think so as I believe that automatic tranmissions have very conservative timings.

How's that? An automatic trans relies on friction materials to work, that means wear. Assuming proper maintenance on both types, the manual will prolly last longer, assuming the driver doesn't destroy the syncros 😉

As far as the engine, IMO the engine with the auto trans will prolly last longer. Not only is there no thrust wear on the bearings, the engine will likely see a narrower range of RPM,
not experience missed shifts, less drivetrain slack, etc.

I'd say shorter. Since it doesn't have a torque converter, you have a higher incidence of pinging and knocking such as flooring the pedal at high gear trying to accelerate beyond what the engine could.
Knocking and stalling and jarring doesn't do any good for the engine

Well how can you explain that my manual shift Honda Accord has 201,000 miles and still counting.

I have no engine problems. But I do need to put in like 3 quarts of oil a month.

Again, ALL OTHER THINGS BEING EQUAL..............


The engine with the automatic should last longer. Much easier on the engine. Think about it....a stick car revs the engine up from stops than loads it.....then the revs fall between shifts only to be changed into another gear and rev back up again.
Plus, the clutch pushes the crankshaft foward and wears the thrust bearing more.
It's really a no brainer question.

That being said, modern engines are generally so good that either type will last a long time.
 
There is no such thing as a manual car shift engine or an automatic car shift engine. They use the same engine in both cars.
 
Most transmissions will last for more than 100k if treated and maintained properly. However, keep in mind if you plan on modifying the car, you'd problebly want a manual transmission, since autos can't take as much torque, specifically the torque converter.

err, it's called a high performance torque converter 😉
 
It all depends on how you drive the car, how much you change the oil, etc. Tranny has nothing to do with it.

Although on average, Manual Trannies last longer than Automatics. But, you have clutch, etc on the Manuals. Manuals do get better gas mileage.🙂
