Generally you're not the first to be called, but during WWII many college students were drafted.

I was wondering myself, so I found a link for the selective services website and checked it out, you aren't exempt at all, but if you are drafted you get to finish the semester, or if your a senior, the academic year. From the reading it would seem that being married, having children, or attending college doesn't get anyone (male) of the hook.

i think it's just order. like people with no wife/kids/college go first. then down the line. btw what medical reasons keep you out?

You're exempt until the end of the semester that your number is called, or until the end of the academic year if you are a senior.

Medical reasons that will keep you out are terminal illness, physical handcap (flat feet is one), or physcological imparements.
Also there is always the conciencious (sic) objector route.

<< Student Postponements - a college student may have his induction postponed until he finishes the current semester or, if a senior, the end of the academic year. A high school student may have his induction postponed until he graduates or until he reaches age 20. >>

Actual quote from http://www.sss.gov/classif.htm

<< Assigning different priorities of call for men within Class I-A on the basis of their being single or married ended with an amendment to Selective Service System regulations (38 Federal Register 13485) on May 23, 1973. Marital status alone no longer affected priority of draft call. Unless revised by Congress or a change in Selective Service System regulations, these rules would apply in a future draft >>

So marital status doesn't make a difference now either http://www.sss.gov/FSeffects.htm
