Is it true all the eggs you buy in the states are white/bleached white?

Not of my sister tho 😛 She's only 16 and doesn't like computers so i figured none of you have a chance 😉

But she did say on return from her exchange that she never saw a normally speckledy-brown-y egg like they are when they come out of the chook...and that her friends over there had never seen a normally coloured egg from the shops, just white White white ones...

These are eggs as the come out of the chook (for Synth):

i assume they have to bleach them to get them white...in which case why bother?
Egg shells are pretty porus too, so i'd be rather worried about the state of the insides of the egg (if they do bleach them)?

Actually they bleach them with peroxide, not bleach, which is safe for consumption. An interesting side effect is that they can be set on fire, and occasionally explode. It's pretty rare, but there was a transport truck this past year that had it's AC go out, and the whole thing blew .. it shut down two lanes of interstate for almost a whole day.

They come out of the chicken white. They do clean them, but the purpose of cleaning is not to change the color. You can buy brown eggs here, they're just not as popular. The egg color is determined by the breed of chicken. There is no difference in flavor or nutrition between white and brown eggs.

You can get white or brown eggs here. But I don't think they bleach them. There are chickens that lay white eggs. Specifically, I recall a pet chicken of an ex girlfriend that laid several eggs in her bathtub, all white.

Brown vs. white

The color of the egg?s shell is a reflection of the breed of hen. Breeds with white feathers and ear lobes, such as White Leghorns, lay white eggs. Those with red feathers or ear lobes lay brown eggs. White eggs are in high demand among most American buyers, but in certain parts of the country, particularly New England, brown shells are preferred. Breeds that lay brown eggs include the Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire, and Plymouth Rock varieties.

They are not bleached; they are painted.
