Is it too late to cook this fish?

I bought salmon on Friday night at a whole foods. It's a orange crusted salmon steak. The sell by date is yesterday, so I'm wondering if it's too late to cook it today (IE: now).

I also bought a stuffed clam at the same time, with a sell by date of today, so I assume I can cook that at least.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Smell it. If it smells exceptionally strong, toss it. Otherwise, it's fine. Fish has a pretty good expiration guide built in ;^)

I'd be a bit more concerned about the clam. I assume it's stuffed with crab? Give it the sniff test too. If it passes, make sure you heat it very thoroughly

I thought the clam was stuffed with sausage?
 
I'm not sure what you meant by "exceptionally strong". I had to put my nose about 2 inches away from it before I could smell anything, and one inch away to have a solid smell come through my nostrils. It smelled strong: like fish. But nothing bad..

I don't know, I've never had stuffed clam. Most of the seafood I get stuffed, is stuffed with crab.

That sounds fine. If you take the cover off, and think "YOW!, FISH!", it's gone off. It should have a light fish smell.

Does it have a very slimy feel to it...I mean, moreso than fish normally does?

Worst food poisoning I ever had was from bad salmon. Fortunately, it didn't last long...only a few hours of vomiting every 15 minutes.

Not really. I ran my finger along the sides of it and it feels like normal fish to me. It's only been 72 hours since I bought it.

Worst food poisoning eh? That may not be worth it for $6 of fish. What did it taste like? Bad? If I taste this and it tastes fine I don't see the problem?
 
That sounds ok to me. I don't cook a ton of fish around the house, but the fish I do cook matches that description. Salmon is a regular for me when I do cook fish.

Thanks. The clam smelled fine. Any idea how long to cook the clam for? I'll do the salmon for at least 15 minutes on 350 as it's a pretty thick salmon steak (one inch).

This'll be a great experiment for you. You've studied this fish pretty closely now. Eat it, and see what happens. You'll know what a bad, or good fish is like after this ;^)

Someone above made a comment about the sell by date. That's a valid observation, but I don't put too much stock in those dates. If it was handled properly at every step, the fish will be fine after that date. Proper handling can't be guaranteed though, so take the date with a grain of salt.

Actually, that was probably the only food poisoning I've ever had. I have a very strong constitution so I rarely get sick from foods I've eaten.

It was at a restaurant so I wasn't able to smell it before I ate it. It tasted fine IMO...but since that was pretty much the only meal I had prior to the 4 hour vomiting spree it had to be the salmon. I still can eat salmon though and probably have it at least once a week.

It doesn't sound like your fish is bad but don't hold me to that...and definitely don't make sushi out of it. 😛

I have no idea about the clam. I've never cooked them myself. What's it stuffed with? I'd probably take the conservative route, and overcook it a bit. It won't be optimal, but it beats throwing it out. 350F sounds like a good temp for that. If it's stuffed with crab, cook at 350F for a bit, then put it on broil to brown the top, and give it an extra kick of heat.

you probably got sick from some other contamination or meal, people tend to blame the wrong meal for the sickness.

if the fish were off, it would still taste off even if cooked.
