Is it time to upgrade?

I currently have a Palamino 1800+ on an Epox 8RDA motherboard with 512MB of PC2100 and a Radeon 9500 (non pro but unlocked and overclocked). I have tried to overclock my cpu, but I cant get past about 1700Mhz. I am not sure it is RAM or the chip, but anyhow, is it time for me to upgrade my cpu? I want to be able to play half life 2 with the pretty effects at atleast 1024x768. Is now a good time to get a new cpu or should I wait till just before the game release. If I should buy now what should I get? I dont want to spend more than $100 on a new chip.
thanks,
-doug

It doesn't make any sense to buy a new CPU now for a game that isn't out yet. By the time it ships the Athlon64s could be out and the XP price line will probably become even cheaper. But if the money is really burning a hole in your pocket then the Barton 2500+ is a great chip at a great price, $95 for the retail setup.

Well, it turns out that my GF4 Ti4200 that I thought was out of warranty (and as a result I already got a new card) is still covered. So that is getting replaced. I was hoping I'd be able to sell it for ~$60 or trade it for a tbred 2100+ which is supposed to be a much better overclocker than my Palamino 1800+.

my 1700+ has hit 2090mhz stable
need better case airflow, cpu was getting warm (too warm for my comfort around 48-50c idle)
only $42 at newegg 🙂

then again, what kind of ram do you have? the 1800+ MAY be able to oc and the ram cant, just a thought there
though, i was surprised to find out my pc2100 will do 190fsb (again, things got warm so i havent tried any higher) hynix/spectec make some damned good ram

I cant get past 147Mhz, and maintain total stability. Turns out Im not alone tho. Maximum PC did an overclocking article and one of the setups was an 1800+ w/ DDR400 and they hit the same wall. Dunno why, but at least Im not alone.

never buy more hardware than you need at the present time....

particularly harddrives.but pretty much everything else as well.

by the time you "need" a upgraded whatever...it has dropped in price and increased in performance.
