Is it time for XP SP3?????????????????

I just noticed yet another update recently and last build I even made a nice slipstreamed install disc to eliminate the time it took me to do XP, then the SP2 cd. Now, even after I've consolidated that, it's getting to be another 10 minutes or so after that just to get up to the last updates. The number of updates is getting ridiculous lately, imho!!

Slipstream the updates.

I keep a copy of my XP CD on my hard drive. When new updates are released, I download them then slipstream them into my CD folder. I have a fully updated XP CD just one burn away when I need it.

What options do you select for "Windows Update" so that you can allow the individual updates to be downloaded into a specific place???

(I, too, have had great success merging my XP cd along with SP2 cd, but haven't ever tried to also include later updates into the whole slipstreaming process).

I think that they will be sticking to service packs when they add some type of functionality. Otherwise, I think that we will just keeping getting windows updates.

Haven't there been "rollups" before that contain multiple updates in one package? I'd like to see a post SP2 rollup released every quarter, containing all individual updates up to that point.

That would be nice. However, you can use Autopatcher as an alternative. Just do a google for it.

I am familiar with Autopatcher. I would, however, prefer such a product to be officially released by Microsoft, and not a third party. I'll keep dreaming.

When I run Windows Update on a fresh install of XP Pro SP2, I get 20 (21?) criticial updates on the first pass. Using the above link, what specifically would you click on to obtain this 20 or 21 item list?

Also, I like the idea of the quarterly roll up. PLUS..........what I *really* don't get is that if MS would just do this, they'd save TONS of bandwidth & server load 'cuz then guys like me could put the updates in a folder, then on my thumb drive and have 'em with me wherever I go.

Customer's pc won't d/l updates anymore 'cuz their 10 year old shut updates off?? Just head over there with thumb drive in-hand and....presto...updates are done!!

Naaahhh..........that's too logical. Why not fry servers like bacon instead!!!

Actually...

The way I prefer to do updates on windows, is to use a script that checks for all critical updates, and installs the updates if they are not detected on the system.

Every week the updater runs and installs the patches from a network resource.

Download the updates to the network resource, update the script to reflect the new changes. Tweak the update script or AT jobs to your hearts content.

Setup a SUS/WUSS/whatever the fvck they are calling it now server. If you have more than 3 or so PCs, and something acting as a server it'll benefit you.

Just go to the Microsoft security bulletin, and from there, you can download an individual file for each security update.

I think it is alsmot time for a Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. I mean think about it. Windows 2000 had 4 service packs released when it had only been around for 3 years and 3 months. Windows XP is already 3 years and 8 months old, and it has only two?? It seems now that Microsoft releases less service packs for each new OS than the previous one. Windows NT 4 had 6, Windows 2000 only 4, and now Windows XP might only have three??

I think Service Pack 3 is due for Windows XP and it should contain all the previous updates as well as some small enhancements in the OS kernel. Service Pack 4 can include the new Longhorn features. Or do you think Service Pack 3 will include Longhorn features and SP2 will be the last Service Pack that won't contain a whole new array of unwanted features that you cannot remove??

OK, I give. I ***completely*** get and have used Autostreamer and think it's a fantastic program. (Good for us & probably good for MS too 'cuz I'm sure those of us smart enough to use it are saving MS some grief by merging our own stuff & not peggin' their servers).

BUT.................

I, for the life of me, cannot get Autopatcher. I mean, I get it, but I don't. Is it just another source for updates?? Is it ***individual*** XP update files loaded onto a server called "Autopatcher"???

And here's the best part...........

When I tried to d/l the FAQ per their recommendation, I find it's a .php file........(which I've had trouble with before.) Well, I understand this to be modified/more contemporary HTML but I cannot get anything to open .php files. (And, yes I realize it's probably a language, but this is the the format the FAQ is saved to when you d/l it).

THEN..........I tried to d/l php 5.4 to maybe hav it be a simple plug-in so I don't have to d/l MS's Picture It (Lord help me!) and php 5.4 is available for d/l in .b2z or .bz2 or whatever....format! WTF are these?? I dunno, but if I just d/l yet another program (CNOW) I can open even THOSE files, so I can d/l and open the others.

Sound like fun?? WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :Q

Anyway, if somebody wants to run Autopatcher by me in layman's terms, I'd love to hear it.

Service Pack 3 will release soon?? I havent heard anything about service pack 3 going to be release? If Microsoft havent release the SP3 so which mean they may be busy working on next version of Windows "Longhorn" that will release in 2006.

I just got DSL last week so if I have to reformat I can get the updates quickly.

When I was on dial up SP2 took 6 hours to download.

There are NO Plans for SP3 as far as I know...

And if they DO release One it Wont have ANY Features of LongHorn.

Pretty obvious why there are fewer Service Packs on newer OS's.. They have Fewer Problems to begin with.. NT 4.0 Original release was a Real Pain to deal with and Worked On almost Nothing But REALLY Mainstream Hardware and DEC Alpha's which took a special Install.

AutoPatcher Includes SP2 and "MOST" of the Critical Updates, Recomended Updates and a few other goodies You may or may not want to put on a fresh Install of XP. All in 1 File that you can Burn and then install these w/o ever haveing to connect to the internet. Kinda nice to have if Building on a bench or only have DialUp available.

Ya, I figured as much, but still don't completely understand how it works.

If it's SP2 plus the latest updates (don't understand how they assimilate between how much they want/need in each version of patcher) then they must be *constantly* coming out with new releases of Autopatcher??

If there was an easy way to collect all of the critical updates from MS, then using that with Autostreamer to create a nice little ISO file that you could update all the time, would certainly make for just as easy a system of patching, no??

Maybe my question is more about the "Auto" part of "Autopatcher". I understand why "Autostreamer" is "Auto" since we aren't all savvy enough to interlace all this crap & create a nice little ISO file to burn, but "Auto-patcher" has me confizzibbled!!

Autopatcher doesn't contain SP2.

Its updated (for XP) pretty regularly, and contains the security hotfixes since SP2 was released. (Latest has hotfixes up to and including June 2005)
It comes in different versions, such as Lite (security fixes only), and Full (Security fixes, recommended updates, reg tweaks, funky bits of software, etc).

You run the app, select the hotfixes etc, you wish to install (normally they're all selected for you) and sit back while it does its stuff.
Once the patches are installed, you reboot, job done.

On the PHP issue... the PHP language is used on the server to translate the page into HTML, so what you have is a regular HTML page, even though it has the extension as if it were PHP code. You can either rename it to have an .HTML extension (sometimes hard to do in Explorer unless you enable the viewing of all file extensions), or right click and Open With the web browser of your choice.

Allrighteee then............on the PHP thing, I did simply rename it to .html (just right click & rename) and then it definitely became an Explorer-viewable document, but all it shows as is a bunch of code. (Mainly lightweight html code specifying fonts)
