Is it time for a COMPLETE upgrade?

My current system (which is not too current I know) is a Tyan 1590s w/1MB Cache, K6II-500, Blaster Banshee PCI w/16MB, and IBM 13GB 7200rpm HD. The memory consists of 3 dimms, 1x256MB PC133 cas2, 1X128MB PC133 cas3, and the original 1X64MB PC100 for a total of 448MB RAM, all Micron brand. I'm not a big gamer so the system does my everyday word processing, web browsing, email, etc., just fine and I have not been in a hurry to upgrade. That changed when I got into using Photoshop 6.0. Now I am frequently working with graphics files upwards of 20MB in size. Manipulating files of this size has introduced an annoying lag time for my changes to take effect. If I am applying brush strokes one after the next to a picture, it really slows me down. Is it time for a new system or do you think a faster video card might be the answer? The lag time I'm speaking of is about 1 or 2 seconds on large files. I can pick up a K6III-400 pretty cheap now, but I didn't know if it would be faster than a K6II-500 because of the 100Mhz clock speed loss.

So the questions are, would upgrading to a K6II/550 or K6III/400 provide any tangible improvement over my current K6II/500? Would buying something like a Geforce2 Pro w/64MB RAM make enough difference to allow me to wait longer for an upgrade? Thanks for any input.

Don't bother with a K6-III (or K6-III+). They're relatively tough to find, and the performance boost isn't that great, plus they're expensive (low volume). Get a cheap duron, an inexpensive motherboard, a GF2, and you'll be good to go, even with your old PC100.

Yea, you wouldn't really notice anything with just a cpu upgrade (especially only a 50 mhz difference)

a cheap duron system like that guy said would probably run you a few hundred, $250 at most.. the rest of the parts you can strip from your current pc.
