I always thought light sabers were stupid and didn't make any sense.

Most of the time I don't care how stupid something is (I like Star Trek) but for some reason the Star Wars universe bugs me.

That's because the technology of Star Trek was founded in some sort of plausability and theorys of the time. Star Wars was just pulled out of George's ass when he wrote it and geeks have tried to describe how the techology "could" work.

Considering the entire point of the lightsaber is pretty useless without the extrasensory abilities of "the force" at your disposal to make it an effective offensive and defensive weapon, the real question is - why would you bother? Just nuke it from orbit.

They would be quite awesome for logging companies.

Why bother with a lightsaber? we have better weapons now.

I imagine it'd be something like that fight in Indiana Jones...
One guy swings the lightsaber around and the other guy just shoots him in the face

saber block OHHHHH pwnt

More importantly, can one invent a blaster that fires lasers traveling so slow that a retarded paralyzed chimpanzee could evade it?

You do realize that blasters in the StarWars universe are based on a kinetic particle wrapped in energy, right? It's not pure light. It's not a laser. It's a tiny particle that's supercharged with kinetic energy. It won't travel at 186,000 miles per second. It's not meant to.

Kinetic energy is the energy of a moving mass due to speed...

Like Gambit can charge a playing card with kinetic energy before throwing it?

Remember, we're talking about make-believe that is extremely loosely based in real world physics 😛

The particle is supercharged with energy before being propelled down the barrel. It looks like a little laser but it's really a glowing dot.

That's the point, without the force a light saber is horrible. No blocking laser beams or bullets, just death.

The problem with star trek is that they don't keep / use the most basic equipment that we field today.

When they get into fights, nobody beams down a machine gun, and instead they fight with laser pistols and end up in hand to hand combat. When they go to a dangerous environment, they don't wear hazmat suits. When their planets get attacked, they don't even have a semi competent militia to repel the invaders. SW didn't bother with technobabble, but the broad strokes are much, much more plausible than assuming that a technological society wouldn't even have the kind of combat skills that napoleon would have fielded, or safety standards up to OSHA's.
