Is it theoretically possible to make a lightsaber?

[Q]

Lasers are used to cut in many fields of work. Isn't it possible to make a lightsaber using one?

Note I obviously don't know the ins and outs of how they are used, but just asking.

Yeah, plasma would more or less work as it can be contained by magnetic fields. Of course, this would require a lot of power and you'd think it would make the hilt and air around it ridiculously hot as well.

Lasers kinda..go forever.

I guess the real world meaning of a plasma lightsaber would be "light" as in "lightweight," a saber with no added weight or momentum or inertia of a blade, making swinging super fast.

Yes, but you have to be careful not to mix new and used batteries, or different battery types.

I always thought light sabers were stupid and didn't make any sense.

Most of the time I don't care how stupid something is (I like Star Trek) but for some reason the Star Wars universe bugs me.
