is it the laptop battery that's broken or something else?

i bought a laptop off of ebay recently, a Dell C400. i cannot get the battery to recharge. i plug the power source in, the green light on the brick lights up, but does not appear to be charging the battery.

should i be able to run the laptop with just the power source and no battery? is it my battery that's bad or something else?

any help would is greatly appreciated! thanks
 
does the computer even turn on?? if it dosen't, the computer is dead. If it does, then the abttery is probably shot. The battery tend to last only about 3-5 years with excellent care anyways. Also from personal experience, don't buy "old" battery off eBay, even if it is new in box.
