Microsoft always has released some dodgy patches which they have to then release another patch. I think this is the only way that Microsoft can get people to stop using Windows XP. 🙁

Sooner its dead the better,Microsoft can then spend their resources more efficiently on better modern operating systems, supporting an OS in this day and age does not make sense,XP users will just have to accept that,,nothing lasts forever.

Yes Microsoft can spend more of their time on rubbish like Windows 8 and metro 😉 Yes i have tried Windows 8 but not Windows 8.1. For a comparison Windows 7 is miles better than Windows 8. Will try Windows 8.1 if i get a chance but nobody i know wants Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Yes i have Windows XP, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.04. 🙂

Actually I was thinking they can spend more time and resources with operating systems after XP,ie Win7/Win8/8.1 and even Win9 but as usual another member that jumps on the Win8 hate bandwagon without thinking or engaging brain 🙄 .

I could mention Linux which is a great modern alternative to XP for some users depending on what software they use.

I do really like Ubuntu 13.04 so would be willing to leave everything Windows related.

MS Will cease XP support next April. The program will not die, however, nor will the installed programs. I have one machine running XP - unfortunately, it is my main workhorse - has the scanner, 2 printers, a Dymo labler,2 DVD burners, and over 50 programs. It is too old to be upgraded to Vista, thence to Win 7. It will keep on keeping on until I replace the machine. And, that will happen next year.

The last updates totalled about 12 on November 13th, and caused no problems. It works as well as ever.

I heard a while ago that there was a critical security hole that could never be patched, unless the whole OS was redesigned. Or have they fixed it since then?

Certain things did need a whole new OS, like randomizing process addresses (someone else can give me correct terminology).

Vista was a necessary step, and honestly highlighted the OEMs race to the bottom more than anything. I have very few qualms about Vista.

Aw, good memories from when I've been using XP back in the days. Everything comes to an end at some point.

Kill it already. Its an old dog of an OS that was never designed for anything modern. At all. Then it makes no sense to move to 7 seeing as its coming up to 5yrs old and any platform updates will likely be for 8.1+, not 7. I'm running 8.1 on a $44 G1610 with 4GB RAM and its just as fluid as a 4770 with 16GB RAM. Zero reason to run old junk in 2014, both hardware and software. Its amazing that people think they could still be using it as a viable OS.

I remember getting a new PC in 2003, and was seriously considering putting Win98 on it, just because I was used to it. Nowadays I really don't care what OS I use, I use Linux mainly now, and 7 just for a few games.

I heard support for 7 will be until 2020 or some damn thing. People like 7 better than 8. Windows 8 three years latter.

We will be on Win10 or 11 by then so does it really matter, point being nothing lasts forever whatever OS you are on.

Got one fixed today.I use to take my xp sp2 disk.and sp3 iso after. But got fed up and got one with sp3.from the dark side off the moon😱. so install turn off update.and very funny using all the same drivers.and it works like a charm.:sneaky:

I am usually the last to say it's time for something like this to go, but I think it is and I had a 98 PC for audio recording up until a year ago. XP needs a GIG of ram now to run worth a hoot when it used to rock & roll on 128 megs. I get the saturation bug more and more and after a while it just bogs down. It was a damn fine operating system of it time. It was the first user-friendly OS that supported 2 cores/processors and was rock solid compared to it's predecessors.

XP will stick around for a while I think, lot of companies are using it, and we're in an era where IT is continuously being downsized to save money which also means less time and money for upgrades. There is no positive change to the company's income by upgrading so management does not see any reason to do it.

While I upgraded to Vista, definitely leaving XP behind probably since 2008(I still ran second machine with XP until 2010). Some opinions here are just way too unreal, for example, many people don't upgrade because they don't need it, what vista, 7 or 8 allows which XP does not? Honestly, nothing, vista brought nothing but performance problems, the 7 fixed the performance in vista, but also brought nothing new to the table, while 8 was even cut from basic functionality.

Gaming, programming, movies, internet, office, multimedia, plug and play etc all we use our PCs for was possible on XP, there is not yet any new activity that has to be addressed by releasing newer OS. I'm not saying there is nothing to improve, but objectively, releases after XP were rather fashion or eye candy rather than functionality. And I am 100% sure most users see computer as a tool and if it works for them they don't resolve the rest, they don't care how it looks, how secure or intuitive it is as long as it does what they need to do.

The NHS in the UK (especially doctors) are using Windows XP and quite a few banks still use it as well.

Newer operating systems bring one big important factor, better and improved security,XP security was a joke, newer operating systems were needed to sort this issue out, infact I'm no longer comfortable using XP at all ,rather use Linux between the two or newer Windows operating system.

I agree about XP's security, I had to be EXTREMELY careful while using it. But I still got malware, and other nasty stuff from websites I thought were harmless (even gamespot, and cinemassacre). Now I use Linux, and haven't had a single security issue.
