Is it stupid to overclock AND run cool-n-quiet

I had been running my Venice at 2.7 ghz, but my computer sits idle most of the time.

Currently I just have it back to stock and undervolted.

Does anyone run Cool-n-quiet while overclocking?

Yep, works great I use RMclock to control the throttling. Mine idles at 1.55ghz on 1.1v and ramps up to 2.8ghz with 1.45 when I run CPU intense apps. It dropped my idle temps from 40c to 34-35c and saves electricity:)

I was using it until I started running distributed computing. It was kind of useless at that point so I dropped my OC and trim the vcore. I had to do something. I was at 48*C.

Now while folding the protiens I am at 44*C. Sometimes things make me wonder if folding is really worth it?? Then I remind myself why I do it.:D

DFI boards are not good to use with amd cool n quiet, but only if you're overclocking...

I did with my Winchester, but Cool 'n' Quiet doesn't work with my Neo 2 Platinum and Venice.

That's total BS, i run a dfi lanparty with an overclocked 2800+ @ 2250 (250mhz) with cool & quiet enabled and it's working perfectly.

At idle my system drops down to 5X multiplier giving me 1250mhz with 1.05volts,everything working as it should.

Cool n' Quiet is an AMD feature that allows you to save electricity when the computer is idle. When the CPU is idle and Cool n' Quiet is enabled the motherboard halves the CPU clock multiplier and throttles down the voltage. With less voltage to the CPU it runs cooler. Since the CPU runs cooler the CPU fan gets throttled down to, thus, making the system quieter. When you begin using the computer again the CPU multiplier automatically and voltage ramps back up to stock speed.

It is possible to overclock while running Cool n' Quiet and people do it all the time. The caveat is that you need to make sure you leave your multiplier at stock and overclock by increasing the HTT (FSB). Cn'Q works by lowering the multiplier to around 5x and lowering the CPU Voltage. This makes the processor run slower and cooler. Then the motherboard will sense that it's cooler and lower the CPU fan speed, thus making your system quieter.

If you overclock by lowering the CPU multiplier and then raising the HTT you'll get instability. When Cn'Q needs to restore your multiplier when the CPU is under load, it will use the stock multiplier no matter what you have it set to in BIOS. That could result in an overclock that's higher than your board supports at your settings and you'll get lock ups. So as long as you overclock with your processor's stock (maximum) multiplier you'll be fine with Cn'Q.

Or you can use RMclock and set your own minimum and maximum multi's and voltage's and control when it throttles:)

thanks for the rmclock info. i couldn't get cool'n quiet to work w/my dfi utlra d board but it works great w/rmclock. now it clocks down to 1150mhz at 1.1v and up to my 2.3ghz at 1.55v. great software

i do, use rmclock actually.

I have a dfi nf lanparty, but this link might help nevertheless:

Btw. i run a winchester 3500 OCed to 2640 right now....and it idles at approx 1V (5x264 HTT).....its so ocld when idle/downloading etc. it blows out cold air :)
j/k..but idling at a mere 1V is great

Ok I can rephrase, there are a good amount of reports of DFI boards not playing well with cool n qiuet..... u can see by the warning on the DFI website Here. So do your research before you call bullsh.t, geeks...

flexy, i know dfi boards need a lot of tweaking and i also know that some people get cool n quiet to work but as icepik said, it can cause problems when overclocking. I got my 3000+ at 2.43ghz and i always keep CnQ off by default cause my HTT is at 270x9 now but im going to try 300x8 ...
