I need to pick up a couple of things at Home Depot, plus get a few groceries for the weekend at Walmart and another grocery store. Would it be insane to go out there this evening (it's about 5:30PM here right now), or is the coast clear?

Grocery stores are fine, this is one of the slowest weekends of the year. Home Depot will be safe in the evening. It's never okay to go to Wal-Mart.

I just picked up some fluids for my car at WalMart, quickest I've ever gone in and out of there. I've never seen open registers with no customers at them before today, it was the greatest thing ever. Can't beat the cheap WalMart oil prices. :thumbsup:

Grocery store is probably fine but I'd avoid Walmart. Even Home Depot might be sketchy but probably not as bad as Walmart.

On the other hand, in anticipation for this day Walmart might have more than two cashiers working tonight.

No specials for the holiday, but I believe it was $26 for a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 full synthetic. At least thats what it was when I got it over the summer for my Trans Am. Today I was just getting whatever was cheap for my winter car, got 5qt of Pennzoil high-mileage for $16.

I was out at around 12:30 today for a pizza and something from Tim Horton's.

Tim Horton's was empty, with the exception of a police car that was pulling into the lot.
The pizza shop only had one other customer.


So maybe I picked a good time, or the shopping surge was finished, or everyone was busy murdering each other at the department stores and had no time for food.




However, I'd still consider 5:30pm on any Friday to be a bad time for shopping.

I just went by Target because I forgot to get a staircase blocker for all the kids that'll be over this weekend. There was more than normal traffic but all checkout lanes were open so I was in and out pretty quickly. Even did a Store Pick up at Sears without any hassle.

My daughter went out to Chick-fil-a a couple hours ago. I thought she was crazy, but she said is was empty. Chick-fil-a is never empty. Guess everyone was at the mall.

Everyone says a lot of places were empty. I smell a "This was the worst BF/holiday shopping season ever for us retailers boohoo" coming. Or worse, a cover up/fudged balance sheets and a "This was the best BF ever" announcement when it was actually the worst.

It was absolutely dead at 7:30PM. Fewer people than I'd expect to see on a typical Friday evening. Either everyone got it out of their systems by then or else they avoided going out to the stores altogether.

It's been a while since I've been to Home Depot, but I expected to find a few things that I found on their web site. But when I got there, virtually everything on the shelves was one of their in-house brands of HDX, Husky or Rigid. Had I known that, I would have just ordered from Amazon for Monday delivery.

I went to the grocery store, that was pretty much it. I tried looking for black friday deals, but nothing was really appealing, and I wasn't in a rush for anything.
