is it safe to say the drive is fried

when the comp boots i get:
strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility
i tried fdisk and it said:
error reading fixed drive
i tried using partition magic and got errors
i tried booting the xp upgrade disk and it said it could not find previous versions of windows
someone please help
 
Sounds like it's crisped to me. You might try putting it in another computer as a slave, and try repartitioning it before you throw it out. Sometimes HDs just get corrupted, and if you can reformat them they're fine.
 
Probably toast.

Make sure it is detected in the BIOS (or SETUP) OK, set it for AUTO DETECT if its not at that already.

Also make sure the IDE cable is good. Theyre cheap to buy and they do go bad on occasion.
 
Is it showing up in POST? You'll get probably a model number off that, that will help you work it out. Failing that, try the major names - IBM HGST, Maxtor, WD etc.
