Is it safe to power up a machine without the cpu installed?

I used to do this all the time. I just switched to a new socket 754 mb however and i want test it and see of everything powers up but i'm not sure if this is completely safe.
Is it safe to power up the machine without the cpu installed?

Well, it'll tell me if it powers up which is all i need to know at this point in time.
It's called trying to find something to do until the new cpu arrives.😀
 
it'll only tell you that the psu is working and that the mobo is not shorting on anything (like solder contact with case)
