My parents have a friend who is about 70 and his wife has Creutzfeldt Jakob. So is it rude, when he stops by(I KNOW that he's not feeling good) and I don't ask him "Hey, how are you?" because I already know the answer?

perhaps it would be more appropriate to ask "How are you feeling?"... but I wouldn't call it rude. Even people on their death beds can have a good day, though.

Asking them if they want a Hamburger would be rude, asking them how they are isn't.

If you want to avoid asking him how he is feeling, why not ask him how his day has been instead?

I know that too. He visits his wife every day, he just sees her laying there and she doesn't recognize him I think.

As long as you don't start laughing and slap his back really hard, I would say it's not bad.

SUCK!

Or let's word it the other way. Mad Cow Disease is the human Creuzfeldt Jakob, the cows actually have Creuzfeldt Jakob.

say something else instead. Like:
"I've been praying for you, I hope all is well."
"Have there been any improvements in her condition."
"Good to see you. I'm glad you've come."
It's always seemed rude to me when people ask me about how I am doing. If anything, ask him about her condition.

that doesn't make sense.

Creuzfeldt Jakob was first and they don't call it Creuzfeldt Jakob for the cows, they call it Mad Cow Disease.

I don't think its rude. People dealing with a problem don't like giving a thesis about the problem to every single person they see. So honestly, I'd just say as much or as little as you want to him.

I don't think it's rude, just continue being a good friend if you are uncomfortable (or rather, see no point) in asking him how he is doing. As long as it isn't making your relationship awkward.

I always ask, even if I know I am up for a half hour story aftwards. This is a big, sad part of this guy's life and he probably needs to talk about it as much as he can in order to deal with it. I am assuming you are trying to avoid such a conversation, but its going to happen.

My vote is yes, even though I understand why you wouldnt.
