Is it recommended to create a partition in your HDD when installing Windows XP?

K well I was wondering what the advantages and disadvantages are to partitioning your HDD and installing Windows XP on that partition?
At the moment I am at the screen where it is asking me and I am not sure what to do.

If your HD is brand new, and unformatted? then u'll need to partition.

I always partition my HD, one part for the windows, the other for data. So that when I want to clean install windows, I can also format my HD and still have all the data on the other partition. I'd recommend you do the same.
 
how big is your HD btw. like say for my laptop. there's 40gb. I use 10gb for windows and system files, and the other partition has 30gb.
 
i dont partition at all, ever, HDDs are so cheap now i just give windows its own 40gig HDD for it and programs, all data goes on obe of the other 3 HDDs in mycomputer

With HDD so big, u can spare a lil more for windows.
And if u have many HDDs, u can do what Anubis says.
 
I partition. 2 HDs 160 Gig + 80 Gig

160 = 20 for Windows XP 60 for music and 70 for programs (that's only 150) what happend to 10 Gigs?
80 for storage

give it 15 or 20, that's what I would do.

I have a 80Gb divided into 20+60Gb and 250Gb on external drive.
 
Definitely partition. I have a 160GB and a 120GB drive. My primary drive has about 20 for XP/Programs; 40 that I haven't decided what I'm going to do with; 50 for Video editing, temp file, etc...; and 50 for data Such as MP3's, documents, digital photos, etc. The 120 has a Primary of 20 that I plan to install XP-64 bit to and dual boot after Christmas, 50 for Program Storage (you know, all those downloaded install files, service packs, etc.) and 50 for backups of key data and OS from first drive.
 
K thanks alot I've decided with going 90 GB for windows and all the games I will play will also be installed on the C drive. Everything else 100 GB such as documents, music, videos, etc will go on the E drive. Does that sound reasonable?

whoa, don't you think 90 Gigs is a bit too much just for Windows?
I suggest 20 Gigs instead
 
If you only have one HD on your system, it's a good idea to partition it into 2 logical drives if you are running any version of Windows.

The reason is that you can just keep or copy all your important files on the second partition, which will not be affected should it become necessary for you to reinstall Windows (i.e. nuke the C: partition).

Having Windows on one partition and programmes on another sounds like the way to go. But if you only format the partition with Windows, would that not mess up the way the programmes are run? Data files, registry, etc. I really don't know, that's why i'm asking.
 
i put xp in a 10gig on my 160 after learning the hard way to separate my files from the os. my other drives (120 and a 200) in that comp are just one main partition though since pretty much all thats on them is movies and music. but its so much easier and quicker to reformat when the majority of your imporant data is separate from the os.

it might mess up some programs, just delete them and reinstall. theres still alot of programs that wont need to be reinstalled tho. i have a e:\program files that i keep stuff that will still work after a format.

i still cant seem to keep free space on my c: drive tho, a 36 gig raptor. i wanna install everything there cause its alot faster than my other drives.

Have stopped partitioning my HDs to pieces some time last century. All my HDs are in one piece, from 20GB HDs to 200GB HDs. I use the small HDs to install OS then ghost/clone to larger HDs, done.
