Hi,

I have Win98se at the moment, but hate it when it seems to want to lock up for no reason.

I have head that XP is very stable.

I primarily use my machine to do the usual stuff as well as gaming.
I also like to burn stuff quite a lot :)

Here are my system specs...

P3-850
458mb RAM
Nvidia Geforce 2mx
Soundblater Live Value!
Creative 40x24x10 CDRW
60gb HDD

that's about it.. well, the main items anyway.

If anyone has had 98se before and gone to XP, could you give me your opinion of XP

thanks

All the Win9X line of OSes are POSes, if you have the cash to spend on XP go for it and don't look back.

YES, absolutely. Although .... I have heard that some games may not work
on Windows XP.

Best Wishes!

Well worth it. Microsoft actually had the nerve to run ads showing the Win9x bluescreens and touting the stablility of 2k/XP ;)

I know its going to sound odd mentioning MS and security all in the same sentence, but as far as Windows Operating systems go, XP is far more secure than 98. Even with the holes. At least with XP there is something to have holes in.

And stability? 98 may be stable for some, but only after a fresh install every 3-6 months for me. I am happy with Windows 2000 for now. I think XP needs a service pack or 3 before I use my hard earned money on it. Even so, it beats 98 still, in my mind.

If you use XP for a while you will never want to use an older version of Windows again. It's not perfect but it's a helluva lot better than any other version. Your machine is plenty beefy to run XP well.

Much agreed. I like 2000. I have used XP a bit and quite frankly, find it to be a PITA. When I can buy 1 copy and install it on all 3 of my computers, and they have all the bugs worked out, then maybe I will upgarde to it. Right now 2000 is just fine!

It's not like you can legally do that with Win2K either...

My only concern with XP on older hardware is the chipset drivers. If all your hardware has drivers available for XP and your motherboard has the chipset drivers available, it is worth it. However, many of the people I know had problems with getting hardware and software to work. XP also has security and bug issues that Microsoft has not addressed. I would do some research to make sure you get an easy transition. Also, get a good backup of all important files on your computer. In case you have to go back to Win98.

One thing I would note on moving from 98se to XP Home, if you run more than one monitor, I read multimonitor support was removed from XP home, along with multicpu support, but if you are running 98 than you obviously are only using one CPU anyhow...;)
