Is it really worth it to get a PS2 this late in its life?

It's been over 2 years now, but a while back I sold my PS2 to a friend. I was trying to get out of debt and such... but now I am looking good financially and want one again. There are many pros and cons for getting one this close to the PS3 release so I decided to come here.

What are your opinions about getting a PS2 now? Not sure if I'll mod or not. Is it worth it?

Thanks as always,

PS3 isn't going to be out until 07', mark my words on it.

and i have a modded ps2 for sale as well if you are interseted 😀 no swap chip.

If there are PS2 games that you really want to play, go ahead and get one. Like purebeast said, it will be a long while before the PS3 is released in North America and you can get a PS2 pretty cheap.

Just wait until PS3 is out and get one really cheap. I always stick with the previous generation consoles.

I still play my original playstation! The games are still fun. When the PS3 comes out, I'll probably get the PS2.

Everything is much cheaper when you stay a full console generation behind the times. Wait till the ps3 comes out before getting a ps2.

most of the great games are pretty cheap now and there are a few good games on the horizon. sold my ps2 a few months ago but i think i might get a slim one just for final fantasy 12, pro evolution 5, and fire pro returns

Why not get one off someone here on the forums? You can probably get the machine and a few games for not too much $$ around here 🙂 I'd say it's probably worth it to do that if there are games you KNOW you want to play. If not, I'd say hang tight and get an Xbox 360 or a Revolution.

I got my PS2 for $130 used, but it turned out to be new because the person who gave it to EB won it and did not want it.

I'm in the same boat as the OP.

I think I'm just going to get the PS2 now. For the longest time I have only owned a Gamecube (contrary to my username), and I'm sick of all these great titles on the PS2 passing me by. Shadow of the Colossus is my breaking point -- that game looks amazing.

Looking forward to finally playing:

Burnout 3 and/or Burnout Revenge
About 5 RPGs
Ratchet and Clank
Resident Evil 4 (for added content not found in the GC version, which I haven't played yet)

well yea, if any you guys wondering, i am still selling my modded ps2 😛.

search the fs/ft forums if interested 😀

Shadow does look pretty good. Not amazing, IMHO, the hair and the tail on the horse look really weird when he runs. They look like 3 or 4 poly's spinning around. VERY strange.

On the whole, though, the animation and texturing is great in spite of the low polygon counts.

I didn't necessarily mean graphically. I more or less meant the concept of the game ? roaming vast lands searching for a super massive behemoths to slay. How epic is that? So cool. I've also read that the soundtrack is excellent too.

Oh yeah, I totally agree, the concept is very, very cool 🙂 I was bummed at E3 because they had all the PS2 games on HDTV's, and SotC was on a widescreen with the stretch mode enabled and it looked *horrible*. Most people just walked right by and didn't give it a second look, at least, while I was in that area. Suffice to say the place is so big you can't really stay anyplace very long without risking missing something else 😉
