installed a 1700xp, when applying arctic silver got a spec about the size of a flea head on the brown part of the proc. wiped it off immediately, wouldn't post. thought it was the mobo. had it tested, turns out the cpu is bad. is ti possible that a.s. residue or something caused the cpu to fry? lmk, jer

A.S. residue? No
"something?" Yes.

It's possible that the cpu was defective to begin with. It's possible that the heatsink wasn't flush with the cpu. I'll let other posters put other possibilities on the table.
 
If AS got in one of the burned bridges it could have shorted the cpu. Did it just get on the brown part or possible near one of the gold dots?

 
well i feel a little better knowing that it wasn't my f-up. i was extremely careful installing everything since i'd only dealt with older chips that aren't as sensitive. as far as the fan being off i used the supplied coppershim to try to keep it even. i'm a little worried about the company i bought the stuff from the 800 # is always busy and their rma department has not emailed me back (i e-d them 3 days ago).i bought it from allstarcomponents. the receipt came in from smk internet. does anybody have experience with this company? lmk, jer

Assuming you used a credit card call your credit card company and explain the problem. Tell them that you ordered the CPU and when you received it is was dead. Also inform them that you cannot get in touch with them via phone or e-mail. They will instruct you to ship it back to them with a tracking number (very important). After that they will take care of further communications with the company and give you a credit. I love credit cards because they protect us, but most people are unaware of this. I had to do something very similar a few months back with another computer company when they send me the merchandise after I had cancelled the order (they let me waiting for 3 weeks for a couple of power supplies). Too many crappy places selling computer stuff... :disgust:

Ive never used shims of any kind. I dont think your supposed to use a copper shim with the XPs. There are some non-conductive shims made for the XP you could use. With the bridges on top being open it would be easy for the shim to short the entire cpu and ruin it. This is what im thinking happened.

 
oh yeah, put it on plastic!i'll call them tomorrow. and the guy that tested it for me doesn't neccesarily like coppershims. this is the first time i've messed w/ one of these procs i followed all directions and had each website in my favs. the darn thing had to b bad when i got it. but i guess i'm still screwed. i'm sure they're going to try to get out of the warranty. jer
