Whats a good way to find a median then? I like listening to my music loud, but dont want to screw up my nice new headphones(v700) which I plan on keeping for a long time. I know I can crank it on my cd player because I dont have an amp on it. But when I hook it up to my computer, how do I know?

the soundcard likely doesnt have an amp built into it either
I remember tho I plugged my sony's into my SB 64 AWE's speaker output tho....damm my eardrums were rattling from the bass
