I have comcast cable and a motorola sb4200 modem.

I have 2 computers that I want on the internet but I dont have a router and cant get one at this time.

So could I just use Internet Connection Sharing in winxp to get both computers on the net?

Could I just get 1 computer on the net then use NIC cards and ICS to get the other one on the net?

Comcast wants to charge me an extra $10 a month for another ip address so that I could hook both computers up to the net but I cant pay the extra $10 right now.

What do you think?

if you want to use ICS to share your internet, one computer must have 2 NICS and it will have to be on if you want the other computer to be able to go on the internet. if you dont have 2 NIC cards installed on one computer already and need to buy one then just buy a router instead. it's not that much more expensive and will save you in the long run. routers are so cheap now so just go out and buy a $20-30 router.

Couldn't you buy a residential gateway? Don't those things make it look (from the outside) that you only have one computer (ip address) on your network?

Wait a sec...if you hooked up the other comp from your first one, with 2 nics and a crossover cable, woudn't only look like one ip address to the outside? I think that Comcast is trying to BS you. I mean, i have that setup right now, and the ip address of my sister's comp (when set by DHCP, and manually) is 192.168.0.2. That's a non-routable address...isn't it?
