Is it possible to use a moniter as an HDTV to watch things in progressive scan?

So it would go from a progressive scan DVD player or Xbox.....to the computer with component cables....back out to the moniter in 480P.

Can I do this or do I need to get a moniter/HD ready TV?

thanks

I don't have a DVD drive right now and even if I got one I'd have to buy a sound card with 5.1 suround....plus I wouldn't be able to play xbox games in progressive scan which is what I mainly want to do.

Xbox will not output DVD in progressive, they didnt want people buying it just for that and then no games, so progressive is locked out for DVD

There are modified XBOX and Gamecube cables for playing progressive scan games on a VGA monitor.

In addition, XBOX can be modified for true VGA and non progressive scan games can be hacked to support it (Apparantly, it's just a flag in the header). You need a modchip for those options though...

You need a Component to VGA transcoder to connect your XBox to a VGA connection. Check out http://www.xboxhacker.net Video forum. The reason XBox does not output a progressive signal for DVD-Video is to due the additional licensing fees Microsoft would incur.

DVDs played directly from your PC using good software like NVDVD would blow away XBox playback anyways.

Nope. No transcoder necessary. I'll get back with some links. XBOXHACKER.net has all the information on that for XBOX also.

expensive solution. buy a hdtv card ~300bux, it might have progressive input support, and it'll output wonderful hdtv on your monitor:)

cheapo..ugh, dvd drive + good software player like windvd4 or powerdvd4. cr@ppy players suck.

and well mod your xbox

Hey thanks for the help.

I'll clear a few things up. I know Xbox does not play DVDs in progressive but some of their games can be played in progressive and thats what I'm talking about.

CZroe, that would be awesome. thanks

Also, I don't want to mod my xbox. I have xbox live and most my games I play are online. I don't want to deal with the xboxlive + modchip hassle.

I just want to be able to connect my desktop and Xbox (ps2 as well) to a widescreen TV/Moniter and be able to play xbox games in progressive scan.

oh btw, I'm a college student and don't have a lot of money. The earliest I'd buy one is around May/June....I can't go too long without EQOA.

He mods a hdtv pack into a vga box with component input for ~600HKD~80USD

That's the cheapest solution

Second on the line is KD-XB

Hmmm, maybe I should just get an HDTV and hook my computer up to that. Get a nice videocard (which I want anyways) with component outputs. It would look pretty good I bet. There aren't that many widescreen moniters around anyway.

thanks again for the help
