Is it possible to use 2 scsi controller cards?

I'm not sure if I'm very confused, but here's my situation. I have an old fireport scsi card (ultra wide/fast). I'm looking to upgrade my scsi devices and just purchased the ultraplex 40x scsi cd-rom. Now I think it's 50 pin scsi connector.

I'm also looking for a new scsi HD. I assume that a good new scsi HDs are ultra2 and 68 pin connectors?

So when I get a scsi controller card, I need one that supports ultra2 (for the HD) but also has 50 and 68 pin connectors? Or do I get a new ultra2 68 pin scsi card and just use my old fireport 50 pin card for the cd-rom? (thus giving me 2 scsi controller cards) Or do I use an adapter on the 50 pin cd-rom, but I was not sure on the performance effect.

Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks.

You can use two SCSI controllers, but may loose an IRQ. Most good new SCSI drives are U160 LVD, soon U320. You may be better off getting something like a Tekram DC-390U3W which will support your Plextor as well as LVD drives.

Yes that was the exact card I was just looking at. Thanks for your help, I think I'm on the right track now. :)

Been running that Tekram card with the same Plextor CD-ROM and 4 LVD hard drives. Check Hypermicro.com as they have decent prices, mention storagereview.com and get free ground shipping.

Check this thread for somewhat related info: DC-390U3W vs. 29160N
