is it? gotta used one coming in the mail after the holidays. wondering if this one has potential

that site says t410 has a 8gbx2 upgrade, yet on other sites it says the max is 8 gb

And also, how do I know if my laptop has 2 sticks of 2gb, or one 4gb ram stick?

I guess I'll assume that website you posted got it it wrong, but I'm unsure if I should replace two 2gb sticks wit two 4 gb sticks or just add one of the supposed4gb sticks with a 4 gb ram stick, all go get the max 8 gb's

It's max of 8GB (don't use 1x8GB). 8GB max for the entire Arrandale generation (T410, X201, dual-core W510). The Sandy Bridge generation (--20) was the first to support 16GB+.

For determining the memory config, you can either unscrew the single screw on the bottom and open up the memory access hatch or use software like CPUz.
