is it possible to thin hair rather than remove it totally?

i have some body hair i'd like to thin out instead of remove outright because, well, it would look funny if i did. is there a way to do this?

if you get a beard trimmer you can crop it so that its shorter...

i suppose you could thin it like a barbar does, though i'm not exactly sure of the technique.

Barbers use thinning shears, but I don't know if most body hair is actually thick enough to use them.
