Is it possible to run Counter-Strike in 1280x1024?

I don't think so. Besides, 1280x960 makes a lot more sense. It has the same ratio as resolutions like 1024x768 and 800x600, which is 4:3. 1280x1024 is a 5:4 ratio so everything looks stretched out, deformed.

I'm pretty sure you can... it requires a regedit i think. I wished the SEARCH functioned worked at HardOCP, because i know there is a thread about it in there. I just browsed through it, but it must be buried deep.

Yeah but for some wierd reason alot of LCD's use 1280x1024 as their native res.
What I don't understand is where the wierd 1280x1024 res came from to begin with...

to bring you up to date, lcd's don't have distorted resolutions, they are sized for it unlike crts. so 1280x1024 is correct on a lcd. go figure eh?

and using non native resolution on a lcd means the 1:1 pixel ratio gets fux0red. it becomes really ugly. such is the curse of lcd. u gotta have a sysetm capable of 1280x1024 for every game.. forever😉

crts still are better for games, not to mention color/contrast.

and no, not that i've seen, only saw 1152x864 res.

Have you found the fix yet? I believe this is it:

1280x1024 fix

3) Go to Registry Editor (regedit.exe), and look for this entry:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Half-life\settings
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then change the value of "EngineModeWindowed" to 0.

Whoa... sorry... that is strange. So why don't they just make LCDs sized for the same ratio as CRTs?

Heya, thanks for the link!

That option was already set to 0, and in there was another option to change the window height - It was set to 960 so I bumped it up to 1024, but it didn't matter.

When I got in the game, it must have automatically resized itself, because it was back to 960. Anyways, thanks for looking! 🙂

You know, i'm almost positive there is a fix for it. I've seen it discussed before and i'm sure i've heard of people successfully doing the fix. If you have time, browse through HardOCP Game forum, it was discussed there a month or two ago. Their SEARCH doesn't work...

maybe because 1152x864 is too low res, 1600x1200 on a 17" is too high and hard to make 😛

Are you serious? 😕

1280x1024 is a standard resolution. So is 1024x768 as is 1600x1200. Just take those resolutions and divide it to 640x480 and if it's divisable, it's a "natural" resolution. It won't be streatch or constrained.

I dunno if I explained it correctly! Anyways, my monitors (18" LCD & 21" CRT) are both at 1280x1024 and they are at correct/natural resolutions.

from what i remember there is a 1600x1200 option, but i think its only under d3d. im in between cs machines now; i can not check. d3d is jsut as good anyway 🙂

Nope! Dude, divide 1024 by 768 and you get 1.333333333333333333333333333...
Same with 640 divided by 480 and 1600/1200 and 1280/960.

But, divide 1280 by 1024 and you get 1.25!! That means it has a different ratio than the others, which means things will look distorted unless the monitor is sized for that ratio.

What clicknext said.

I agree that 1280x1024 is a standard res, as in alot of drivers/monitors support it, but it's not a standard res in the sense that it's not 4:3.
640x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x960
1400x1050
1600x1200
All these are 4:3, 1280x1024 is 5:4, hence it's not a standard resolution the same way the others are.

LCD monitors DO distort at 1280x1024. Measure one. The screen will be 4:3. And measure a 1024x768 LCD. The ratio will be higher than 4:3! LCDS have square pixels.
