Is it possible to run a modded xbox w/o a hd?

My xbox hd blew up, and I don't want to get a new hd just for it because all I do is use it to stream video. Is there a way to boot up from dvd and be able to stream w/o needing a hd at all? xbmc is quite small and can fit in a dvd.

thanks

Gotta wonder about accounts from Ye Olden Days of AT, with less than 1400 posts. Who is he? What planet does he come from? Why does he have no comprehension of proper forum usage?

No, needs the HDD just to boot. Can you start your computer and go into windows without your HDD installed?
Well there you go ;)

The reason why my post count is so low is because I don't make irrelevant posts like this.

You know that you can put any size IDE harddrive into the XBox right? I know I have at least 3 harddrives just laying around that I keep as spares.

Just stick any other IDE harddrive in.

In Theory.... you could with the proper hacked bios. The xbox checks the DVD drive first for an executable then if none is found goes for the hard drive. Example I KNOW an xbox will boot software from a DVD with an unformatted hard drive installed. Whether or not the bios will ignore the fact that a hard drive doesn't even exist is a different matter.

Give me 15 minutes and I will go check, I have a few xboxs open that I'm working on.

Anyone want their xbox modded? :p

It will probably give you an error. Depending on your BIOS/chip (I hope you're chipped) you can possibly edit the BIOS file to allow the system to boot without a harddrive. But don't take me 100%, just a possibility if I remember correctly. However with that said, wouldn't streaming anything need the HDD to cache the information?

Correct. That's where you are going to run into problems. Sure you might be able to boot xbmc off a CD without a hard drive but the second you try to load any media you are jacked.
