hi,
I was using the usb hard disk when the compuetr shut down itself from no where...the next time I restarted the PC...the usb hard disk wont work...the power indicator will glow red all the way and then glow red-yellow-red-yellow etc.
I dont want to lose 40 gb of data

try the freezer trick. stick the drive in the freezer over night. it might fix it. 🙂 you cant fix a hard drive by opening it unless you have sophisticated material and are in a clean room. a single speck of dust will damage the platter.

1st try changing USB cords, and maybe another Power supply for the unit and reinstall the drivers

I changed the usb cords and the enclosure, nothing happened.
in another forum some people said that if he hard drive is making a noise then it's dead..is it true?it didnt fall on the ground or anything else...the pc shut down itself and the hard drive aint gonna work.

I have a question about the freezer trick....how am I suppose to put it ina freezer?ina bag or what and for how long?it's 2,5 inches disk. And should take out the enclosure?

Hi, The freezer trick is for a drive that wont spin up. You can hear it spin up or use the gyroscope effect on an external enclosure. Just pick it up. Have you tried the usual. Scandisk Through should give you a good idea about the trouble. Jim

windows wont detect the usb hard disk at all...I will get a balloon popup saying that the hard disk[device] is malfunctioning or something like that.

put the drive in a ziplock bag then into the freezer. After an hour or more take it out and hook it up as fast as you can...and hopefully you can get the data off.
