Is it possible to rename my Network Controller?

Okay, maybe I'm crazy, but can I rename my Network Controller name?

My network controller properties show it like this, can I delete the "#4" ?

NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller #4

I think it's impossible to do it. It used to be normal until I uninstall my nforce driver, then install a new version. I keep uninstall and install...now it lead up as #4...

There is a way to do it, if you are brave enough to go in to the registry. Go in to the registry editor, and search for Controller #4. You will find a string that says NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller #4. Right click on it and click modify. Remove the #4, and then exit regedit. Look in your network properties, and walla, the #4 will be gone!

Um yeah, duh, just do what thor86 said, right click on it, and click rename, lol a bit easier than going to the registry to do it!

No man. Click Properties on LAN, then it label it as Networkd Connection #4. Can't even rename the thing. I know it's nothing, but I just want to be neat. Oh well, maybe the next Format and Fresh install of Window will do the job.

The numbers may be added in Device Manger when old adapters or previous driver installations of the same adapter are still present but hidden. To really show and enable removing hidden devices, go to System Properties - Advanced - Environment Variables and add the System Variable "DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES" with a value of "1". Then in Device Manager - View - Show Hidden Devices will show old or inactive schtuff as greyed out and most of 'em can be uninstalled.

Did you try doing in the registry like I showed earlier? I am using windows xp though, so if you are using a differant OS, maybe it won't work.

Hey Auric, when I do that, these is what it show on my Network adapters:

Direct Parallel
NVIDA nforce #4
Ras Async
Miniport (a bunch of them)

to stevty, yes I'm using XP as well. Will go in there and change the value will make Window to delete the "#4" ?
