Is it possible to re-encode say something on a vcd so that it will be playable on a DVD?

If so, are there TONS of steps and a lot of lost quality? What are the cons of trying to put a VCD > DVD format so it will be playable on a DVD player instead of finding a VCD player?

I'm assuming your DVD player doesn't play VCDs?

You can use a program like Nero to author the files to DVD format. You shouldn't lose anything in the translation.

Except that the file was probably compressed (and thus is of somewhat low quality) to fit on the VCD in the first place.

VCD to DVD-R?

1. Seperate audio/video (de-multiplex)
2. Change audio stream from 44.1 to 48.1
3. Merge audio/video (multiplex)
4. The video should be able to be authored onto DVDs.

(S)VCD2DVDMPEG will do it fairly painlessly

Obligatory DVDRHelp.com plug. Seriously, all the info you need is there

This site is either down or I just can't get to it right now.

read up on the first link, then. useful info there

the easiest way esp if you are going to be playing alot of vcd's is to buy a cheap dvd/vcd player....your pc's dvd may work too.

There may be a mod for the console too....I don't know

converting a VCD to DVD sounds like a pita to do each time if it's a weekly thing...

Most of the time a VCD is a VHS tape converted to digital format....it's rare they take a DVD and do it.

If done right it should be just as good as the original tape....however most VCD's floating around are poorly done.
