A friend of mine bootcamped his system and had a bunch of problems with it with sluggishness and stability (crashes). To "fix" this problem, he formatted his drive and reinstalled the Mac OS only (which subsequently took 4+ hours) and has now determined that his drive is not writing any faster than 4.2-4.5MB/sec.
This to me sounds like something has reverted to PIO mode, but I've -NEVER- seen this happen in the Mac OS. So I am hoping there might be some command in the terminal to get this sort of information about the drives and Google is failing me
This is a related MS support document (and installing SP2 doesn't just fix this problem like the document suggests in Windows, but it helps to explain why I think the bus may have reverted to PIO) http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B817472
. The workaround listed in this document is definitely the best way to get a drive back into DMA mode immediately on restart in my experience, but this isn't exactly something you can do in the Mac OS.
Let's suppose the hard drive is fine (it passes all tests thrown at it and is SMART verified...and is also brand new).

Can you poll DMA/PIO mode status in the Mac OS? And if so, how can you re-enable DMA in the Mac OS if somehow PIO mode is stuck.
