Is it possible to purchase hardware that will allow me to connect a free standing DVD player to my computer screen?

I recently purchased a DVD player for its MP3/CD-R/CD-RW ability and would now like to watch DVD?s on it by connecting it to my computer screen. I don?t have a TV and really would not like to expend money on such a purchase. Does anyone know how I can watch DVD?s on a computer screen without installing a DVD player in my computer, or anything else on my computer? Is there something like a switch box that I can switch between the DVD player and my computer?s video card? I know there is stuff like this for printers but I don?t even have the slightest clue as to where I should look or even if they exist. Any help would be appreciated.

Why in the world did you buy a standalone DVD player if you weren't going to use it on a TV? For much less than $100 these days, you could've bought an internal DVD player that basically has the same functionality of a standalone DVD player.

if you have a tv-in card, you could run the s-video in and use dscaler, but I can't think of any other cheap / easy way.

I purchased a new 5.1 system and wanted to be able to play my CDs on one disk (ie ripped and burn to MP3). Now I wish I had the ability to watch DVD's in case I ever want to, but I don't want to by a TV I have no room in my place right now. Just wondering if anyone knew if there was a way to do that, like a switch or something. Anything else besides the TV out?

If your video card has Video In(the VI in VIVO), then you can connect it to that. You can also get a tv tuner card and hook it up through that. I have my vcr and my psx connector to my Hauppage Wintv.

or you could buy a LCD mon with video-in like Samsung's MP series, Planar, etc.

You could play a DVD player on your PC with a Video Card with DVI (Digital Video Interface) and VIVO (Video In Video Out).
But as far as I knew, GeForce series came out in "three class" :
1. TVOut only => i.e Powercolor, MSI, Gainward GeF3 Ti200
2. TVOut+DVI => i.e Hercules 3D Prophet III
3. TVOut+DVI+VIVO => i.e Gainward GeF3 Power pack Golden Sample, ELSA Gladiac

Or maybe you could buy an ATI RADEON

I have a ATI Tv Wonder card (not the VE version) about 3 months old. Works great but I DO have a TV and I DO use it .

Willing to part with the card for $50 shipped if interested. LMK!

Hey Xing, I think Logar has got exactly what ya need! With that card you can input the DVD no probs and also have a fully functional TV tuner, stereo by the way, and watch TV on your monitor as well as DVDs. If you are dealing with a space issue this is a great answer. I run the ATI TV Wonder and it gives a great picture, better than Hauppauge IMHO!

No offense but I tend to lean towards buying from place I return or get support, simply because in the past I have done similar transactions and because I have so many modifications with my system, things don't work. Well, the Radeon 64 MB VIVO has video in, and so do all the AIW Radeon/Rages. If you don't game, you can even get the Rage128 Pro, it has VIVO, probably can get the card for like 40-50 bucks.

So you bought a 5.1 speaker system and DVD player so you can listen to mp3 CDs? You do know mp3s are only stereo, right? You sould take back the DVD player and get a DVD-ROM and instead of a VIVO video card get a 5.1 sound card.

You'll get a better picture, probably save money, but you'll also be able to use the speakers with whatever you want.
