is it possible to mass evacuate a LA-sized area if....

let's say there was another terrorist attack... like a larger scale one than 9/11. or an unexpected bomb attack/ asteroid strike that'd require mass evacuation of the area within one to two hours. is it possible? is this something our government is working on because i think it should be an integral part of our homeland security.

*assuming no private cars allowed on the freeways*
 
Yeah good luck with that! just imagine the disruptions and mayhem, no freaking way could you get an orderly efficient evac, lmao
 
It's possible but it would take very precise planning and a lot of very skilled drivers that knew where they're supposed to go. Definately possible, but very, VERY unlikely.
 
nope impossible. The gridlock would be to much. They could probably evacute key areas with high population densities. The area the evacuees would be sent to would be responsible to the speed an evactuation can occur. I'd give it 2-3 days to get a full evacuaction complete
 
If the hurricane evacuations I've experienced are any indication the answer is no. No matter how much planning is done people will fvck it up and it will take days.

These were evacuations with days of advanced warning and it still didn't go smoothly. It took 14 hours to make a 2 hour drive. As for homeland security I'd imagine a plan would be in place knowing that it wasn't going to work and the focus would be geared more toward cleanup, disaster relief, and the implementation of martial law.
 
Not possible at all if you are talking evacuation via roadways. I'd say in 2 days you couldn't get everyone out if not longer.
 
well assuming no inbound traffic from the outskirts and all lanes are used to get out of the city, everyone takes buses it would still not be possible? i haven't taken statistics... but it's probably out of scope anyway

it wont work because we are human beings not robots. People will cut in line because they want to get out of there as fast as possible, others will be busy looting shops, pickpocketers would be in heaven, and little kids and babies wouldn't cooperate and would slow everything down 10x.

the only freeways out of LA to the north are 101 and 5 me thinks..


5 is a 2 lane freeway... not a whole lot that LA-ers can do
 
No, not possible. Even if there is no traffic congression and we are robots, i.e., move our cars at the same speed at 75 mph out of the city using all the roads. We still don't have enough time to move all the people out of the city in a given time frame. There are just too many people.
 
maybe if everyone commuted to trainyards ... and then hopped on freight trains ... those things can hold nearly infinite weight ... and they may not be too fast .... but I think you'd be able to cram about 150 to 200 people per car ... and the average freight train is like .. 100 to 150 cars long .. thats between 15000 and 30000 people per freight train. I know if it was an area like Chicago, where railways are all over the place ... getting hundreds upon hundreds of freight trains out of the city, as well as loading and unloading them, would not be a problem, 300 trains would get between 4.5 and 9 million people out ... any international airports could probably handle another 50000 or so people ... I Figure freight ships are about 1000 feet long by 100 feet wide, thats around 100,000 square feet of surface area ... now lots of it would be filled with obsticles, but there are also multiple decks on some ships, 10,000 to 20,000 people should be able to fit aboard a freight ship without too much discomfort, assuming that there are between 50 and 100 ships available ... thats between 500,000 and 2,000,000 people safe out at sea.
On the expressways ... if every lane is used for outgoing traffic, the roads should be able to handle about 100 cars per minute assuming no gridlock ... if there are 12 total lanes of expressway ... thats about 144,000 people over a two hour period. Assuming that there are hundreds of state, county, and local roads, another couple hundred thousand should be able to escape city limmits ...
Anyone that has boats would be able to take their boat out of the city ... imagine every boat from every marina in the city filled to capacity ... that would probably get at least another 100,000 people out to safety ...

It's definatly theoretically possible to evacuate a major city in a few hours ... assuming all lagre scale methods of transportation were used and combined, however, as many others have pointed out, due to human nature, it's not realisticly possible. (just like how comunism may sound good on paper, but fails miserably in real life)
