Is it possible to make money from the 'net with banner ads? How/where can I learn more?

I was wondering how advertising on the net works. Can sites make money just based on page views and NOT click throughs?

Thanks, Ed

Yes, many sites (such as AT) have an advertiser that pays per impression, meaning that they pay a set amount per every, hundred, or thousand "views" of their banner ad. A good way to find banner providers is go to a site and put your mouse over their ad banner, and in the status bar in IE a URL will come up. For anandtech it's:

http://connect.247media.ads.link4ads.com....

So you could try going to that site. Or if that didn't work, try going to 247media.com.

Thank you very much.

Any idea of a ballpark figure regarding the "going-rate" for impression views?

YES!! YOU TOO CAN MAKE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, JUST BY PLACING TINY ADS ON WEBSITES! IT DOESN'T REQUIRE ANY SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE! YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A PROPELLERHEAD TECHNOGEEK TO WORK FROM HOME AND MAKE MONEY FAST! I STARTED MY ECOMMERCE SITES FROM MY TINY ONE BEDROOM APARTMENT AND START GETTING CHECKS IN THE MAIL FOR TWO THOUSAND, THREE THOUSAND, EVEN SEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS A WEEK!

JUST SEND $1000.00 TO ME VIA PAYPAL FOR MY NEW BOOK AND VIDEO SERIES, "MAKING MONEY ON THE INTERNET - SECRETS OF ECOMMERCE CASH FOR THE NEW MILLENIUM ULTRA PROFESSIONAL PLATINUM DELUXE LIMITED EDITION" :D ;):D

Well I don't know about the larger companies, but I've worked with several websites who have had smaller advertisers. The reason for this is that the larger ones require a certain amount of impressions per month. The websites I worked for didn't pull that number of hits, and so I remember one of them used Burstnet. I believe it paid a little over $1 per 1000 impressions. I think I remember some of the larger ones (Doubleclick maybe) paying $3 or $5 per 1000 impressions.

...But I'm not the best source. I'm sure some people here have better estimates than I do.

Daeman...Can you give me your paypal info?

Also, will I have to put forth any effort after I send you the money, or will it just come to me?

Once you get a certain amount of hits as I'm certain AT does advertisers pay you not for impressions but strictly for advertising on your site. You can be quite sure that a flat rate is paid for advertising here as well as bonuses. As for making decent money I have one of the highest hit Beatles sites on the net and make a VERY comfortable third income from it. If your site is worthwhile and people visit you'll do fine.

Taz- I checked out your site. I was wondering if you receive your income from Tripod or from All advantage?

Okay, I've been in this business long and have been through a whole lot of it really..

So here's the bottom line: internet advertising is bad right now, just horrible. A year ago a good CPM rate ($ per thousand hits) would've been $10 (Which is extremely good), nowadays a website is lucky to get $1 CPM. Meaning if your site gets 100,000 hits a month, you'll get $100. But a company like Flycast (if you get accepted) will likely pay nowadays $0.15-$0.20 CPM. If you're lucky it could go as high as $0.50. Good quality sites out there hover around $0.70 CPM.

There are two things affecting the CPM rate, volume and rates. It used to be that 80% of the inventory (which is based on hits, or possible impressions, as each hit can display a new ad) could easily be sold by big companies, nowadays it's more like 20%. When a pay ad isn't avaialable for pay, a "default" one shows up in its place. So with volume as well as rates decreasing, it leaves little room left to make any money at all.

I have much more knowledge to share about this subject, so if you have any questions feel free to ask. But the bottom line is, unless you plan to make the next Yahoo!, don't plan on relying in ads for any real amounts of money. Even Anand himself is having trouble selling his forum ad space, which is evident because the same "default" banner ads show up about 98% of the time from what I've seen..
