Good pitch is learned, but singing ability for the most part of something you're born with.

dang, I knew it. Ah well, my future sold out Las Vegas concerts will never come to fruition

You could always be a rapper.

Well, I'd have to argue on the benefit of learning.

Now, the ability to be a crazy solo star with the greatest voice ever - those are people born with great abilities, but are also invest a ton into coaching.

But, for just general singing, say in joining a band or going solo with a guitar or something... most of that isn't necessarily born ability, but rather learned. The difference is the base that you are born with. No amount of coaching will give whatever voice you want, but coaching can bring out the best in whatever 'singing' voice you were born with. Most have this ability I'd say, be it purely a higher pitch voice or a deeper voice.

maybe you got the pipes and you just don't know it?

Both. I used to not be able to sing at all - I was practically tone deaf, since I never had any sort of vocal training. Once I started taking Chinese, I had to improve my vocal abilities quite a bit, since pronunciation is key (there are different tones that require specific vocal inflections). Now I can sing much better, but I'll never be able to hit the high notes that my chorus-trained friends can, and I doubt I'll be able to beatbox decently. A good friend of mine also has practically perfect pitch, which is very much a born-with attribute.

The difference between being born with and learning abilities is why a lot of these actors who try to start singing just suck - despite good coaching, they just weren't born with the ability.

I never knew I was a good singer until I tried singing with Rockband. Now I regret not pursuing a musical career instead of this boring computer programming career. Right now I would be the famous vocalist of a metal band known as Arcadio and the Schrodinger Cats...

have you tried out for Idol yet? Based on your uncanny self-analysis of talent, I'm sure you'd be a shoe-in for a spot in the early weeks.
