I want to install IE 5.5 on a PC, but don't want to wait for the entire thing to download. I do have a Windows ME OEM CD, which I know contains IE 5.5. Problem is, I can't seem to find an option that allows you to skip the installation of the OS, and only go for IE. Any ideas??

I can't think of a good way to do that . . . you could order a copy of the IE 5.5 on CD (by itself) from M$. Might be good to have in the ol' tool kit.

Hi there,

You can upgrade to 5.5 from the Microsoft Windows Update site. I did. It's like a 38mb download. Took about 8 hours for me to download it, but it's worth it. 128-bit encryption gives peace of mind, and I think surfing's a bit quicker too. Give it a shot.

you seem to have a scorching download rate there MichaelD. :)
if you are going to need to install IE 5.5 on a few pcs then download it from MS but choose custom install & under advanced choose download only to whatever folder you want. burn a copy of the downloaded program & install at your leasure!

Hi Bacillus,

Yeah, that dial-up is a real scorcher sometimes. It seems that whenever I download anything from Microsoft, the transfer rate is s-l-o-w! Lately though, I've been downloading everything else at about 4k/sec which is positively blazing for me. DSL is in my future for sure! Have a good day.

in \aoltech\windowsme browser

the only problem is the ie logo is replaced by aol logo, the title bar becomes "Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by America Online".

of course you don't need to install any aol software, unless you don't know how to do so.
