Is it possible to install a NEC 1300 DVD burner into an external Firewire enclosure?

sure why not, I've used my Pioneer A04 and now my Sony 510A in an external firewire case. Anything with the Oxford 911 firewire bridge is good

FYI CPU utilization is much lower with firewire. Newegg has a enclosure that supports firewire and USB 2.0. Coolmax 510 for about $75. Nice thing is that you can mount both 5.25" and 3.5" devices in it.

Or you can just buy an external drive if you don't have one already. Price difference has dropped a fair amount between internal and external drives.

I hooked my NEC1300 up to a USB 2.0 and it has performed perfectly. I then installed it in a Firewire and it performs just as well as the USB. I didn;t notice a difference at all between the two.

That's because the maximum transfer speed of most DVD or CD drives is lower than the minimum speed sustained by either Firewire or USB 2.0 - but when you put a hard disk into the same enclosure, you'll realize that Firewire'sperformance beats USB 2.0 by a pretty good amount.

What he said. Hook a hard drive up and you'll see a difference, the firewire enclosure will be up to 100% faster for large transfers. And you can forget about the advertised "400MBps" transfer rate, since you're limited to the speed of the particular device. For a hard drive, it'll be more like...

USB 2.0 = 10=20MBps
Firewire = 20-30MBps

For CD/DVD roms though, it won't make a difference. 4x doesn't come close to the transfer speeds of either.

I have external enclosure with optorite dvd burner.
USB2 works perfectly, however, if I use firewire, It detect as removable drive.
Why is that?

Some people have reported similar problems with firewire when the drive's jumper settings are not set to MASTER - try setting it to that and to see if that makes a difference.

I also put my NEC 1300 into a Firewire case for easy transferrability. It works great, the same as it did in the computer, plus I can use it on what computer I'm working with.
