I'm trying to transition out of my industry (EE, power focus), and it seems like Big Data is one of the industries which offers a decent entry level salary. If the languages are learned and the candidate can interview well, are these types of jobs possible without industry experience? I'll be looking to move the end of next year, have already started to prepare.

Or do I have to get into a lower level IT job before making the transition?

Big Data isn't an industry, it's a method of data management that deals with how it's stored and worked using parallel server processing. It's applicable to any company or industry that gathers data so you're better off deciding what you want to do and figure out how that relates to a potential employer who would be a big data user. For example, do you want to be Data Warehouse product manager? Or be a Hadoop developer and learn Impala, PIG, Hive, etc.? Or be a systems architect? Or a SME who knows SQL, Python, or whatnot and helps customers define their needs so the technical team can figure out how to design and code?
