Is it possible to fry a vid card by oc'ing too much?

I have an MX440, and last night tried overclocking with "coolbits". Everything seemed to work fine when tested with 3Dmark2001se. Yet when I tried to play my normal games today, I can only get 800x600 resolution, where before I could do 1024x768. I even returned the card to its default speeds, but no luck. Please help!

You can fry a card by playing it heavily at too high of an overclock for a long while (after all it is working above spec and will tend to burn out faster). I would totally uninstall the card, then reinstall it with new drivers, like the 30.82 seems to be pretty stable. Then see if you can get your higher resolution back again, and if not, it might be time to RMA the card.

How far did you overclock it? What game is only running in 800x600? Might have to reinstall the game. You could have fried the card if you ran it overclocked for too long, and the GF chip became too hot.

I only play Continuum and Dungeon Siege. I used to run both at 1024x768. Now they both only run at 800x600. Funny thing is, I can set the desktop at an even higher resolution, I just can't game above 800x600. This was my first time oc'ing anything, so I checked several websites that mentioned that the 440 could be oc'ed as far as 305/500, normal is 270/400. I ran mine up in increments to 290/480. It seemed to be ok running 3dmark2001se. It's only when I tried my games today that I found a problem. I called the company and will be able to get a replacement tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback, guys. I guess it will be awhile before I try to oc anything again.

What hapens when you try the higher resolutions? can you ellaborate further. It is possible to kill ram by o/c but you will then see lots of errors normally on the desktop as well.

Well, going to higher resolutions on the desktop goes off without a hitch. However, when I set a game to play above 800x600, I get a black screen, almost as if the monitor was in standby mode. The game comes on. I can hear the audio playing, but all I get is the black screen. I have to use the Windows keyboard key to get back to the desktop.
